Thanatopsis
Thanatopsis by William Cullen Bryant
To him who in the love of Nature holds
Communion with her visible forms, she speaks
A various language; for his gayer hours
She has a voice of gladness, and a smile
And eloquence of beauty, and she glides
Into his darker musings, with a mild
And gentle sympathy, that steals away
Their sharpness, ere he is aware. When thoughts
Of the last bitter hour come like a blight
Over thy spirit, and sad images
Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall,
And breathless darkness, and the narrow house,
Make thee to shudder, and grow sick at heart;--
Go forth under the open sky, and list
To Nature's teachings, while from all around--
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air,--
Comes a still voice--Yet a few days, and thee
The all-beholding sun shall see no more
In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground,
Where thy pale form was laid, with many tears,
Nor in the embrace of ocean shall exist
Thy image. Earth, that hourished thee, shall claim
Thy growth, to be resolv'd to earth again;
And, lost each human trace, surrend'ring up
Thine individual being, shalt thou go
To mix forever with the elements,
To be a brother to th' insensible rock
And to the sluggish clod, which the rude swain
Turns with his share, and treads upon. The oak
Shall send his roots abroad, and pierce thy mould.
Yet not to thy eternal resting place

Shalt thou retire alone--nor couldst thou wish
Couch more magnificent. Thou shalt lie down
, With patriarchs of the infant world--with kings
The powerful of the earth--the wise, the good,
Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,
All in one mighty sepulchre.--The hills
Rock-ribb'd and ancient as the sun,--the vales
Stretching in pensive quietness between;
The vernal woods--rivers that move
In majesty, and the complaining brooks
That make the meadows green; and pour'd round all,
Old ocean's grey and melancholy waste,--
Are but the solemn

Gaius Julius Caesar of Rome, Alexander the Great of Greece, and Genghis Khan of Mongolia were exceptional rulers during their reign. To this day they are still studied and praised for the achievements and goals they accomplished as rulers. Many historians often find themselves asking the question: “Now what exactly made these men so great?” The answer is quite simple. Each man in charge of his empire had the exceptional leadership skills to pilot an army effectively, dictate the government in which he ruled, and take over large and vast areas of land and control it effectively. These qualities were possessed by each ruler and allowed them to rule effectively for many years. Though all good things must come to an end and even though they did not live to see some of their dreams come true these men raised and set the bar of how leaders should lead, conquer, and act.…

There are many Local Environmental Issues regarding the earth’s beautiful ecosystems. One recent issue threatening to tarnish the ecosystem is the highly invasive glush weed or hygrophila costata. This weed is vigorously spreading in waterways causing the death of organisms and clogging drainage systems throughout the Herbert River District. Once established, Hygrophila can cause environmental and economic problems due to it rapidly multiplying and becoming a disastrous problem throughout the waterways. I chose to write this essay about the symbolism aspect that is featured in so many great works of literature. Two such stories that we have read in which symbolism is demonstrated is in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, and The Worker in Sandalwood by Majorie Pickthall.…

Madagascar is located off the Southeastern tip of Africa. The island is one of the four largest islands in the world with a land area of 226,657 square miles. Geological theory is that the island broke away from the African continent over 150 million years ago, but humans did not inhabited the island until 2000 years ago (wildmadagascar.org, 2007). The isolation over that period has helped develop a unique biodiversity on the island. Its biodiversity is among the richest on the planet, with over 250,000 species across the island. Most of that biodiversity is found in the tropical rainforests that cover most of the Eastern half of the island. What really makes Madagascar’s biodiversity unique is that almost 175,000 (75%) of those species are only found on this island. There are an estimated 12,000 plant species, and almost 8,500 of those are unique to Madagascar, including 1,000 types of orchids.…
