The Accomplishments Of Empress Matilda

Empress Matilda was born around February 1102, no one really know the exact date. Not much of her childhood is known, although when she was around the age of seven she already was told she was going to be the bride of King Henry V, and when she did get married she was very loyal, faithful, and fulfilled most of the duties she had as a wife and an Empress. The one duty she failed to fulfill was the duty of having children. Although some historians say she had one child but they dies at a very very young age, this cannot be fully proven. Besides these devastating issues her younger brother dies in a sinking ship in 1120, then her husband died in 1125.
After her husband’s death, her father told her to bring him back home. On Christmas of 1126,
Henry had all the important magnates and prelates take a solemn oath to support Matilda as his successor and swear to it. This also had to do with any of Matilda’s future son. Then Henry negotiated the betrothal of Matilda to Fulk’s son Geoffrey le Bel. They got married in June of 1127. Their marriage was very difficult and had much conflict. Soon Matilda became arrogant and left Geoffery in 1129 and went back to her father in England. A couple of years after she left him, he begged her to go back to him. Because of this, the royal council held a meeting and they debated but did not confirm the separation. Matilda then got sent back with Geoffrey. Young Henry was born in March of 1133 and Geoffrey was born in May of 1134. After the second child Matilda became deathly ill but she recovered, and after another son, William, was born in 1136.
