The Age Of Responsibility Alan Greenblat
“The Age of Responsibility” The age of responsibility, what is the age of responsibility, is it when we can drive? When we can drink, or maybe it's when or brain is fully developed. I think the age of responsibility is when you turn 25 because that is when our brains are fully developed in every way. I will expand farther on my reasoning's throughout this essay. First of all, from my experiences with different things we become responsible as we grow. The driving age of responsibility should be increased because drivers should be 17 for a permit and not aloud to drive alone until 25. Because young people aren’t responsible enough to drive alone because of the amount of accidents they get into. I myself don’t think most people my age are ready to drink or drive because of how irresponsible most of them are. Another subject of the age of responsibility, what the drinking age should be.
In the article “What is the Age of Responsibility” By Alan Greenblat (2009), Alexander Wagenaar, “a health policy professor believe lower the drinking age would be disastrous. The amount of teen deaths lowered 15 to 20 percent because of the drinking age being increased to 21 from 18.” (14) I agree with this statement because young people aren’t

Young people who commit crimes as minors can sometimes be tried as adults. “According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, youths who had been tried as adults are 34 percent more likely to commit a crime again, also more violent ones” (17) If the young person is on the verge of 18 which is considered an adult then being tried as an adult makes sense but, if they’re let’s say 13 years old being tried for drug possession as an adult and get 3-4 years in an adult prison for simply possessing drugs then that just doesn't make any sense. A 13-15 year old should always be tried as a juvenile unless the charge is manslaughter or

Every four years the United States enters the frenzy of election. Presidential candidates from multiple parties get ready for a campaign across the nation to gain popular support from both the delegates and the people. The presidential candidate not only has to win the popular vote, but also the majority votes in the Electoral College. The Electoral College serves to elect the president and the vice president of the United States. It is a form of indirect election which is opposed by many. Those who oppose the system fear that the Electoral College will allow the possibility of a minority president or a faithless elector, while people who argue in favor of the electoral system believe that Although the Electoral College is archaic and flawed, it is still currently the most sufficient form of election for the President; though changes may be made, it is unlikely that the entire system can be replaced.…

The article states, “After states set the age at 21, he says, teen highway deaths immediately dropped by 15 to 20 percent.” When talking about the change in drinking age from 18 to 21. It’s also in the context of returning to the 18 drinking age. Wagnar puts it best when he states,”The people who are advocating going down to 18,’.., ‘should acknowledge that they're willing to risk an extra thousand deaths per year and double that number of injuries. " (14) This is only one example that exhibits how 18 is a lackluster age when compared to the responsibility thrown on to it.…

The age of responsibility to me is of 25 years of age. I believe this should be considered the age of adulthood because that is when your are fully matured and realize the consequences of your actions. Science shows that the pre-frontal cortex of the brain is not fully developed until this age. The problem with the age of being eighteen is that most teenagers are still in…

Through evaluation, it is clear the age in which an adolescent can handle responsibility with drinking is 21. This should be considered the ideal age of adulthood because, lower ages are too immature and older ages already have the ability to handle a lot of other responsibilities. It is a common social belief that the age of 18 is the age of adulthood and that you should be given all your responsibilities and rights at once. The problem with the drinking age being 18 is that 18…

Each year, there is talk as to whether underage is that big of deal and if the drinking age should be lowered, raised, or just remain the same. I feel as if underage drinking is not okay and many unnecessary deaths are caused each year because of teens engaging in underage drinking. If anything, raising the drinking age to twenty five years of age would help ensure less deaths due to drunk driving or DUI’s. Therefore, laws against underage drinking should still be enforced and the drinking age should be raised in order to prevent more death or any other negative effects associated with underage drinking. Now, there are many reports of deaths due to underage drinking.…

A teenager should not be tried on the same level as an adult, if they can not do things an adult does. Juveniles are too young and know little about the world; therefore, they should not receive the harsh punishment that adults are being given. Since we are the parents of our kids “It’s why they can’t smoke, or drink, or go to R movies without our OK” (Lundstrom). Adults are lot older, intelligent, mature than teens; therefore, they should not be tried on the same level as adults. Although minors have some knowledge their brains are not matured like adults to make right and wrong decisions. It goes far as beyond to saying teens will not know what they did wrong until they are told. In the article “Juveniles Don’t Deserve Life Sentences” Gail Garinger states, “Brain imaging studies reveal that the regions of the adolescent brain responsible for controlling thoughts, actions and emotions are not fully developed. They cannot be held to the same standards when they commit terrible crimes.” This shows that teenagers are not capable of making decisions and they can not control what they do, even if it is wrong they will not know. Teens should not be charged as adults for the crimes they…

There has always been and ongoing debate on whether or not juveniles should be treated the same as adults when it comes to committing crime. Some people feel that they should be treated the same, some feel that they shouldn’t and then there are those that feel that it depends on the crime. Juvenile crime is on the rise at an alarming rate and some feel that there is a lack of remorse on the part of the juveniles because they know that they will only serve a minimum sentence. In New York State the age for a juvenile to be charged as an adult is sixteen some people feel that this is too young to be tried as an adult and others feel that it is not because at this age the difference between…

There are many laws that specifically prohibit teen and adolescent under the age of 18 from doing many things and are there to “protect” us. There is always a punishment when they are broken. The same should apply, if a juvenile is to commit a heinous crime like homicide or first-degree murder, they should be tried and sentenced for the crime. Therefore, I do agree that juveniles should be tried as an adult when they commit the same crimes as that of an adult.…

People still debate whether juveniles should be tried as adults. There are many juveniles creating adult crimes and getting away with little sentences and use excuses like being too "young" or inherited genes. Some juveniles really mean to kill or hurt someone and that is not acceptable for that person to get a little sentence. In the article "On Punishment and Teen Killers" by Jennifer Jenkins, it talks about how juveniles deserve to be tried as adults for committing commensurate crimes which is a good decision.…

For sixteen years, teenagers look forward to the day they get the ultimate freedom: driving, but with this freedom there comes risks. Every day another life is lost to teen driving. Along with risking their lives, teenagers are also not mentally prepared to handle the consequences that could come with driving. They are not only putting their life at risk, but the lives of others. No mother or father wants to bury their child, and this would be less likely if the driving age was raised. The legal driving age should be raised to save lives and have more mature drivers on the road.…

The “Age of Responsibility”, 21, is a completely arbitrary age chosen unintelligibly by a group of men because twenty year olds still aren’t fully developed or trusted by society in general, and people don’t even develop at close enough rates to have a universal “Age of Responsibility”.…

Granted, juveniles should be prosecuted in the same court as adults, assuming that teenagers understand the law like adults but this isn’t exactly true because juveniles are more likely the criminalize themselves by accident. This is because teenagers don’t know the law and they are more likely to say something without thinking because their brains aren’t fully developed.…

According to Boston University, research has proven that the legal drinking age of 21 decreases the rates of drunk driving, crashes and underage drinking."If we choose to decrease the legal drinking age, there will be consequences," says Public Health Professor of Boston University William DeJong. There is no downside to the legal drinking age of 21, the effects will only be positive. In the 1970s, many states in the United States have lowered the drinking age and the deaths increased. Meanwhile, the legal drinking age of 21 has reduced deaths according to CNN. After the drinking age nationwide rose uniformly to 21 (from 18) in 1988, there were 5 to 9 percent fewer deaths among drivers ages 18 to 20 says in Dejong’s report. (Singh 2014, Nelson…

needs to stick up for underage kids to save lives. Also, by lowering the drinking age more teens could have access to alcohol which could increase deaths each year due to driving under the influence. Sexual assaults, violence, and injuries also indicate dangerous actions that could take place (Moyse). A survey showed that 78 percent of adults support 21 as the drinking age and 72 percent believe lowering the drinking age would cause adolescents younger and younger to want to drink (Moyse). The old saying, that many underage drinkers use, is “let’s make up for lost time” which makes them inexperienced once they start. Adults can problem solve, behave better and make logical decisions, whereas adolescents do not. Teens are known for acting on impulse, getting into all kinds of accidents, fights, taking part in risky behaviors, and not thinking before they act…

Another major reason I think that the driving age should be raised to 18 is because young drivers are not experienced. There are many factors that young teens are not aware of while driving, and don’t pay attention to all their surroundings on the very dangerous road ways. One inexperience would be that young drivers may follow to…
