The Albino Forest
Jagged cliffs edged down the foreign slope like frozen magma-fied waves. The sky burned charcoal and lightning thrashed desperately to the ground. Beyond the mountains, pale light melted into an ocean of nothingness, except a pale, white glow. The screen flickered and slowly turned black. H2O the robot rolled soundlessly into the lighted base and stopped beside me. “The planet has 63 moons, 5 gas planets, and 3 other existing planets in the Oort Cloud. It is the only planet possible for life. Its gravity is equivalent to Earth’s. But, you will need to wear a spacesuit to enter its atmosphere.” I leaned against the meeting table and became aware of the quiet breath of Alicia behind me. I …show more content…
I lay flat on my back and groaned. Jeez, these spacesuits are heavy. Ali walked to my side, “See, what did I tell yah, you’d kill yourself alone out there.” She pulled me up to my feet, both of us nearly stumbling. We began walking toward the mountain “Where are we going?”
I asked. There was a pause. Knowing her, she was probably out of breath. There was a sigh, “We’re going up the mountain. If there is life anywhere, it would be where there are resources and minerals.” The view of the mountains got closer. Alicia leaned over me, laying a cool, wet cloth on my forehead. “Looks like you hit your head pretty good. You were out for almost an hour.” She sat next to me.
I sat up with a groan, dizziness engulfing me. Ali reached to help me lay back down, but I shooed her hands away.
“Sit for a while,” she asked. No, she wasn’t asking, she was ordering, no negotiating.
My vision returned and I stared not at Ali, but behind her. There lay a forest, not any color, but white, just white. I blinked to make sure I was seeing straight. “Is that a..”
She glanced behind her and nodded.
I was so confused, I didn’t even bother to be angry at her for not waking me sooner. “How did we get here?” I asked quietly. I felt calm, almost fascinated.
She smiled as she took the rag and dipped it in a big leaf that was full of water. I realized it wasn’t a rag at all but a piece of strange fuzzy plant.
“Where did you get that?” I asked seriously.
She squeezed water out of the plant, “I got the moss from a tree close to hear. Why?”
“Just curious,” I replied, relaxing a bit. “Say, we should get moving. Where’s East?”
“Yah,” she agreed. But she stood still like she was waiting for
