likely that it will happen. But at the same time, there are always things that can make it harder like growing up in a family that's not financially stable or having to unexpectedly drop out of school. And those are always the moments that make or break a person’s dream, because it depends on if they decided to give up or to have a growth mindset and keep moving on. In the narratives that we’ve read in class most of them were based on a difficult time that the author had to face, and how they worked around it. All of the other informative readings that we’ve read in the textbook were more about explaining what it takes to succeed and how it plays a role with many other things, including pursuing dreams. All of these readings connect to each other having to do with success, goal setting, intelligence, work, and the struggle. With all of these traits it shows that it’s possible for a person to have the life that they wish. The textbook chapter called Education and Work is a informative reading about the history of education, what schooling is and what types there are, how money is involved with education what it does for a person, and lastly it talks about what the issues are, how education plays a role, and what is the power in the workplace. How this has anything to do with having the life that is wished upon is because when you start off in elementary school and work your way up to college you spend that time deciding what you’re going to study and get your degree in, then spend the rest of your life working in that field. So knowing what you have to do to work your way up could be helpful in the long run. The next reading is called Struggle For Smarts?
and it compares the major differences between the way that western and eastern cultures learn. In American cultures it’s always difficult to make sure you get it or else you’re considered not smart enough, and with our social norms, it would be very embarrassing to call someone out when they don’t know something that is being taught. That could affect the future of that child because they would feel like they’re not good enough to get it, and would think down of himself. And according to the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy when you think poorly, you do poorly. The novel Outliers is a book about success and what it takes to succeed. The author gives many theories to what makes a person successful whether it was achieved or passed down from family. Some of his theories were first that it’s predicted a successful person is born within the first couple months of the year, preferably January 1st in the mid 1900s. Another one is a high IQ that is higher than the threshold which is 100. Taking time to practice a bunch also helps, its always said that practice makes perfect. and lastly by who your family is and how successful they …show more content…
are. In the reading Blue Collar Brilliance, the author talks about his experience growing up with his mother being a blue-collared worker and how it caused him to look further into what type of work they do and what it involves. A blue collar worker uses their intelligence and their hands to work for their employer and most of the time, their customers. When it comes to these type of workers, they are one of the most strongest of customers because they can multitask by mentally problem solving and figuring out the problem all at once. Blue collar workers don’t take much college experience depending on the profession, but they need to be able to or will learn to learn new things everyday and remember them because it teaches them to stretch their mind to think of other ways to make things work. When it comes to the American Dream, most people think it’s possible to achieve and others think it’s completely impossible. In the reading Is the American Dream a Delusion? the author is a teacher informing her students about if it’s possible to have it all after starting off with nothing. She felt like it was an uncomfortable thing to talk about since she claimed that she knew what’s possible for them, and to achieve the American Dream isn’t one of them. What I thought about it is that it does help if you come from a more wealthier family, but if you come from a lower class you’re just going to have to work harder to get up there especially if you are expected to stay where you came from from society. That comes from the reading I am Always a Fiction where you need to make yourself before the world makes you. I believe that success is achievable no matter who you are and where you come from. One novel that we’ve read was called The Other Wes Moore giving two stories about two boys named Wes Moore who had very similar lifestyles. You would think that since they were so much alike that they would both end up in the same place together, either failing to succeeding. Well you’re wrong, they both went completely different paths; one became a convicted felon in attempted murder, while the other became successful. I believe that parents do play a big role in their children succeeding or not, the reason being is because they push them to do the right things because they have been through it all themselves so they know what to avoid and to take on. Wes’s mom pushed him to go into the military and he tried to escape many times because it wasn’t what he wanted to do, but after talking to him mom and realizing all that it took for him to get in there, he stayed and everything payed on. The other Wes didn’t have anyone to support him like the author did so he did what he wanted to do and took the right path, to failure. The narrative called Julia Burney was a story of the author’s life growing up. She was raised by young parents who went to the bar every Friday, came home and started fighting, it got so bad to the point where Julia has to call the police. The police inspired Julia to become a police officer and encouraged kids to read. She opened a library for the local kids to go and borrow books, be read to, etc. I believe that Julia seen that she didn't have an opportunity to read knowing that it goes a long way, so she made a difference for every other child before it caused them to take the wrong path. Even though she had many obstacles to knock her off track, she stayed motivated to make a change for herself and others. The last novel that we’re read was called I am Malala, it’s about a Pakistani girl who stood up for education and was shot in the face by the taliban and survived.
According to Malala In this culture, female students that attend school all want to either be doctors or teachers because that’s all that women can choose to be if they attended school. And with this information I connected it to our textbook chapter called Stratification. On page 44, it talks about caste systems and how you’re class depends on who your parents are. The sons follow their fathers and the daughters follow their mothers. With all of these facts, it makes sense why people from other countries come to America, to take on opportunity and have freedom. It’s why most women do not want to be limited when it comes to education, and they shouldn’t
be. All of these stories did have a great point of how a person can succeed through goal setting, having intelligence, working hard, and having struggle. And I liked how I was able to relate to some of them to each other to backup the author. I believe that no matter who the person is, they are able to have what it takes to succeed because all it takes it to be able to learn from your mistakes, and using that to practice and avoid the problem. According to Gladwell in the book Outliers it’s always know that practice makes perfect, and it gets better the more you do so.
