The American In The Backyard Scene Analysis
In the beginning of part three, Paul brings some of his friends from Tangerine to his house. Everything is going well until Erik and Arthur show up. They make a racist comment about the kids from Tangerine and they enjoy seeing how upset it makes them. Tino stands up to Erik and insults him back, but Erik punches him in the face. In that scene, Paul is in his backyard. Almost all of the backyard scenes have been negative. There haven’t been any good memories there that Erik hasn’t tainted. All the time Paul listens to Erik and Arthur “kicking a football into a net in the backyard.” Paul describes it as a “short violent sound” which shows how violent he knows Erik is, just like he saw when Erik punched Tino. Another negative backyard scene was when Paul had Joey come over in the beginning of part two. Erik and Arthur came and started mocking Joey and his dead brother. They made cruel comments about …show more content…
When Erik punches Tino, Paul thinks he might have seen his dad, but Erik doesn’t get in trouble. Right after Mike Costello’s death, Paul hears Erik and Arthur laughing about it, but his mom is in the garage and “didn’t even notice.” In both the scene where Tino gets punched and where Joey is bullied, Paul doesn’t do anything. Throughout the past few scenes Paul has shown fearlessness, but his fear of Erik is too great. He believes Erik is capable of things as extreme as murder. Paul is so “paralyzed with fear” that he is unable to defend himself or his friends. He’s too afraid to tell anyone about Erik and who he really is. Overall Paul has had many bad memories in the backyard because of Erik. It is clear that home doesn’t feel like a safe place to Paul while Erik is there. Paul is still trying to overcome his fear of Erik, and maybe one day he will be able to go into his own backyard in

He notices once he enters how many documents are for Erik while there are none for him, he notices a document on Erik showing all his stats and future colleges wanting to go to and future scholarship offers. While Paul does not even know a single stat or even what position he plays. In the book Tangerine, page 234, Paul states “ Dad as I noticed knows all of Eriks stats and attended all the games while with Paul he has not been to any games and does not even know one single thing about Paul’s soccer career.” This shows that the Dad lowered Paul’s confidence and self esteem because he was never there and made him feel left out or that he is a bad soccer…

In the end of the book the protagonist’s problem finally is resolved, when he gains the courage to tell someone about the violent and angry behavior his brother shows all the time. At the end of the book Paul said to the police officer ,”I saw him, I saw Arthur Bauer sneak up on Luis Cruz, like a coward and hit him on the side of the head. Luis never even saw it coming… I saw - I heard Erik Fisher tell him to do it.” This is really where Paul overcomes his problem in the book by finally telling someone else about the things that he saw his brother do.…

Nobody would expect that Tino would even attempt standing up for himself against Erik, nor could they imagine how Paul “saved” Dino’s miraculous shot. But the odds approached and those events did happen in Tangerine. For those characters, they clarified possible instead of impossible, which lead people to think that Tangerine is a book of possibility. Tino always believed that he gets what he wants whenever he wants it, so if that meant for him to smack talk Erik, so be it. Paul figured it was practically impossible for someone to physically get up in Erik’s face the way Tino did, based off his reaction to the incident.…

Fisher’s choice of letting Paul go to Tangerine Middle School. Paul’s self-concept is that he knows that he can make goalie if he just has a chance to try out for the team. So, when his parents let him go to a new school, he is delighted because he knows he will play an important position on the team. He will also able to show his parents that Erik is not the only star in the family. Paul says to his parents: “Do you understand? I wouldn’t be the water boy there. I’d be the goalie,” (Bloor 94). This conveys that Paul knows his self-concept that he will be able to make the team because he stated, “I’d be the…

It was pretty low but went down to the earth's core from that point forward. “He was killed by Arthur Bauer; on orders from Erik” (Bloor 242). Paul was so mad from this he wanted Erik to be closed to killed if anything. Erik has been bullying him but this is the furthest it's gone in his whole life. Once Paul started to expose and do what Erik was doing to him, making Erik scared and afraid. “Erik, apparently, was holded up in his room, hiding his face” (Bloor 271). Paul had have been waiting for this to come his whole…

Being an American means having the freedom of expression, the means of going places wherever and whenever. People here have the choice to go to any school, play a sport, go to church, and pursue their goals. Government is chosen “by the people, for the people,” as written in the Gettysburg Address. Americans have a say in how they live. Leaders come from elections, not appointments; therefore, all people have the opportunity to be heard and contribute to the way that the country runs.…

Throughout the book, Paul’s attitude towards Keller changes many times usually as a direct result of the way Keller treats him. For example, when Keller throws away one of Paul’s manuscripts, Paul fiercely hates him but when Keller surprisingly says that Paul should have won the music competition, Paul once again feels genuine affection for him. These changes in feelings by Paul show that he is a character who often lets his heart rule his head, and that his behaviour is very often dictated by his emotional condition.…

Everything was going great until Jack to asked “Who’s going to join my tribe”(150)? I couldn’t believe it! At first I thought nobody would join him besides his hunters, but I was wrong! The only kids with who decided to stay were the twins Sam and Eric. Shortly after this awkward episode, our attention was turned to noises we heard coming from the bushes. Out came one of the kids on the island covered in blood saying something about a parachute man. All of the hunters were too busy chanting, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood”(152)! They did not pay attention to who it was they just suddenly pounced on him and started scratching, hitting, and biting him. It was not my fault though, “It was an accident” is what i kept telling Ralph(157). Even ralph said I wasn’t a part of it, he said, “You were outside. Outside the circle. You never really came in”(157). Either way there is nothing we can do about it now, especially since most of the kids have gone off to castle rock with Jack, I can’t wait to go over there with that conch and tell him how things are gonna be. I still have one more story to tell you about what has happened on this stupid…

It has not always been like this. There was once peace in this land, though peace is now naught but a faded memory. When I first came here, i only saw the smiles of the kids in the streets just kicking a ball or running around. Now what I see is half broken roads with half or completely destroyed buildings with possibly 'invisible' bombs around the roads. Instead of travelling around this city in a taxi, I have to travel in a goddamn Humvee. 6 years ago it was, when I first landed here in a plane, being forced to come here to negotiate with the government of Afghanistan with that of mine, USA that is.…
