Tom’s life is changed drastically when the car crashes. He has dug too deep into what he refers to as the ‘black hole’ and he loses the will to live: “Trying to shut down the bad thoughts that always surfaced and suffocated any hope I had of getting my life back.” (pg.15). He tries to get better by starting running as a way of releasing his stress and worry. Someone who was essential for Tom to move on was Daniel his brother: “‘Do you hate me, Tommy?’…. ‘Daniel.’ I swallowed. ‘You’re my brother.’(pg.141) Although Daniel has done such a horrible thing Tom is not willing to give up on his brother. Another character that helps Tom conquer his past is his Uncle Brendan. Brendan really gets Tom to open up and see the world from another point of view; this causes Tom to start talking: “You were hardly ‘Mr Have-a-Chat’ when you arrived. Now I can’t shut you up.” (pg198) He moved on from his past and found happiness in himself and his life again. He finds himself through his girlfriend Chrissy because when he’s with her all he is, is himself: “When I was with Chrissy I was me again. Simple Tom Brennan - no ties, no debt, no guilt, no bad thoughts. Just me, the way I had always known myself.” (pg.261). Although the road to happiness was hard for Tom, his desire to…

Tom is very narrow-minded, and believes he is much superior to everyone, and therefore, should have everything. This is clearly seen when he brings up his opinion over a book he claims he has been reading, as he says, “this fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things”(Pg.16). Tying in with the fact that Tom believes he deserves everything, it becomes clear he also loves to have total control over everything, even people. Thus, ultimately treating people like his property, and manipulating them along the way. This is seen by the fact that Daisy stays by Tom’s side, even though she and everybody clearly know about his mistress. He is able to not only have his wife, but his mistress on the side, who he parades around publicly, to his wife’s humiliation,” I was confused and a little disgusted as I drove away. It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms — but apparently there were no such intentions in her head. As for Tom, the fact that he ‘had some woman in New York.’ was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book”(Pg.23). When a situation does not seem to go his way, Tom reacts aggressively, and violently, in an effort to manipulate the situation to benefit him. During one encounter with his mistress, Myrtle, she blatantly causes a scene and rebels against him, “some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face, discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy's name. Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(Pg.41). He is definitely not the type of person to allow people to disobey him or humiliate him, or to even feel like control is slipping away from his…

It also features a single father and a son, with the family unit lacking a mother, therefore showing the family platform differently than previous decades. The father role is largely responsible for instilling good moral values and socially acceptable behavior, which is easily seen in the role of Andy Griffin being the straight shooting sheriff of a small…

After Staring in the hit The Andy Griffith Show, he stared in the 1980’s to 1990s show, in the title role of criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock. The playwright shows this though Charity’s bubbly personality, which can be seen in the scene where her and Oscar are trapped in the elevator. She is calm and collected and to help Oscar she starts singing a song about telling yourself to be brave so that you can do anything. This illuminates the point of having a positive outlook on life can make all the difference. To contrast this however, in the same scene where Oscar and Charity are stuck inside the elevator, Oscar is panicking and can not seem to let go of his insecurities, which is also paralleled in him not being able to tell his support group he is shy, belonging to the “church of the month group,” and eventually not…

The Andy Griffith Show aired for almost 7 ½ years in the 1960’s. The final original episode aired in April of 1968, however, 45 years later we are still watching Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee, and Barney in the slow-paced fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina. We have to wonder why this show continues to draw interest from a society that is completely different in so many ways, almost a half-century from its inception. Show writer Bill Idelson gives this assessment: "You know what the secret of the show is? You know why everybody loves it? It 's about man 's humanity to man rather than man 's inhumanity to man. He 's a sheriff, the police – the symbol of oppression, brutality and ignorance throughout the world – and here 's a guy who treats his neighbors and the people on the street as if they were human beings. I think people hunger for that so much that it transcends all of culture (Parnell, 2010).”…

Since the late 1940’s, television has been a staple in American culture. A show that was very important in American television history is The Ed Sullivan Show, created by Ed Sullivan and Marlo Lewis in 1948. The show lasted until 1971, making it the longest running variety show in history and the twenty-fourth longest running show in primetime history. The show aired on CBS from 8:00-9:00 pm after being filmed in what was eventually named, The Ed Sullivan Theater. The Ed Sullivan Show lasted as long as it did because it was able to target all audiences in the hour show, which was one of the first television programs truly to do so. It was cancelled in 1971 because of the technological advances of television which made any television program available to anyone, at any time. Although other variety shows have been incredibly popular, The Ed Sullivan Show is the most important variety show to date because of its appeal to all ages.…
