Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate empirically in the hospital administrative environment the relationship of leadership behaviors to subordinate manager's perceived outcomes, through examination of B. M. Bass's (1985) model of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership. The author measured leadership orientation and outcome factors through subordinate managers' ratings of hospital CEOs using a questionnaire, which asked: Is there a relationship between the leadership styles of hospital CEOs and subordinate managers' self-reported willingness to exert extra effort, perception of leader effectiveness and satisfaction with their leader? Findings revealed that the relationship between transformational leadership and the outcome factors were stronger and more positive than were the transactional and laissez-faire styles. These findings are consistent with the hierarchal patterns reported and support the universality of the model. On the surface it is reasonable to deduce that management manages and leadership leads however Burn’s research led him to conclude two distinctively different approaches which are transformational leadership and transactional leadership. The transactional module appears more suited to the role of management as, in its simplest form, is built on the principle of give and take. This form of give and take may create feelings of inequality due to disproportions in the give and take dynamic. The transformational leadership seeks to foster change from leading within as a means of fostering external change while creating an environment, which seeks to promote equality (Burns, 1978). This beckons consideration of whether effective managers can act as effective leaders. In the context of nursing according to Hurley and Hutchinson “Within a well resourced and structured hospital… mentors and leadership competency standards were used to develop leaders who also held managing roles” (Hurley & Hutchinson, 2013). However even though leadership is considered an essential component of nursing practice it is divergent from the practice of management (Stanley, 2006). While these two opposing perspectives have merit, one thing is fundamentally clear and that nurses need to feel supported in change if effective forward progression within the industry is to occur…

Although no empirical research is completed in this paper, the literature reviewed and previous research indicate that the transformational style of leadership augments the transactional style, but not vise versa. It also emphasizes that leaders need to become more transformational toward employees and allow them to participate in the decision-making process. As more leadership research is continued, the following research question is proposed for future study: To what extent would an exclusive transformational leadership style in police organizations have on rank structure and promotions?…

The three articles used for this comparison matrix looked at transformational leadership and how it affects those in relation to each study. The three articles were all written with a different purpose in mind, with all three correlating to the same hypothesis, “How does transformational leadership affect employees/individuals in different settings?” With similarities found in topic, it was also evident that there were several contrasting variables within each article. The three empirical articles that were utilized for this comparison were as follows: Transformational Leadership in the Public Sector: Does Structure Matter, written by: Bradley Wright and Sanjay Pandey, The Effect Of Transactional and Transformational Leadership Styles on the Organizational Commitment and Job Satisfaction of Customer Contact Personnel, written by: Charles Emery and Katherine Barker, and Principal Leadership and Student Achievement: What is the Effect of Transformational Leadership in Conjunction with Instructional Leadership on Student Achievement, written by: William Greb.…
