Introduce Program
This year’s event will focus on what is known as the Hook-up Culture and its effect or lack there of on our self- worth. Upon completion of this program we want all in attendance to leave with the understanding that no matter your view on the topic you should make conscious decisions before engaging in any type of relationship, sexual or otherwise. Remember there are always consequences to your actions and it is up to you use your intellect as adult to avoid those. Though a situation maybe fun in that moment the after effects emotional or otherwise can leave one with much to be desired. Don't just claim to be an adult act like one. And dont be afraid to ask whomever you are engaging with questions.

Marriage Statistics
We've been hearing for years that fewer and fewer people are tying the knot, and a new study reveals just how much the marriage rate has declined in the last century. A new report released Thursday by Bowling Green State University's National Center for Marriage and Family Research found that the U.S. marriage rate is 31.1, or 31 marriages per 1,000 unmarried women. That means for every 1,000 unmarried women in the U.S., 31 of those previously single women tied the knot in the last year. For comparison, in 1920, the national marriage rate was 92.3.
The rate of satisfaction in marriage is higher for husbands and wives when both regularly maintain religious attendance and feel that God is the center of their marriage. (Source: The State of Our Unions 2011, 31, 33)
Couple Statistics
During the early twentieth century, dating evolved out of a courtship ritual where young women entertained male callers under the watch of a chaperone. By the 1960s and 1970s, “hooking up” increasingly replaced dating, mainly because the age at which people marry for the first time had begun creeping up. (Source: facts.randomhistory.com)
What is Hooking Up?
“hooking up” could mean anything from kissing to intercourse.
Despite the ambiguity of the term "hookup," 84 percent of students reported that they had discussed theirs with friends in the previous four months. Over 50 percent reported at least one and a third reported at least two hookups during the school year, indicating that these liaisons -- however the students defined them -- were common.
During what time did hooking up become more common?
Hookups began to become more frequent in the 1920s, with the upsurge of automobiles and novel entertainment, such as movie theaters. Instead of courting at home under a parent's watchful eye, young adults left the home and were able to explore their sexuality more freely.
What feelings are most associated with hooking up?
557 male and female students who responded to a question asking how they felt the morning after a hookup, 41% of those expressed sadness, regret and ambivalence. So, 59% feels otherwise.
What generation is known as the “Hook-up generation”?
OURS-20-something/college age kids

Can it be distracting to your priorities as student?
A number of studies have looked at regret with respect to hookups and have documented the negative feelings men and women may feel after casual sex. In a large Web-based study of 1,468 undergraduate students, participants reported a variety of consequences: 27.1 percent felt embarrassed, 24.7 percent reported emotional difficulties, 20.8 percent experienced loss of respect, and 10 percent reported difficulties with a steady partner (Lewis et al., 2011). In another recent study conducted on a sample of 200 undergraduate students in Canada, 78 percent of women and 72 percent of men who had uncommitted sex (including vaginal, anal, and/or oral sex) reported a history of experiencing regret following such an encounter. Can it change your perception of yourself?
In a study of 832 college students, 26 percent of women and 50 percent of men reported feeling positive after a hookup, and 49 percent of women and 26 percent of men reported a negative reaction (the remainders for each sex had a mix of both positive and negative reactions; Owen et al., 2010). Dave Berry is a hilarious and captivating writer. In his article he breaks down three characteristics of what a guy, not man, is. First and foremost, he explains how guys like neat stuff, as he puts it. For example, purchasing over qualified computers for miniscule assignments. While not using the computer for its upmost potential. Or how the space shuttle is still around for guy’s entertainment. Basically, the shuttle breaks down, they fix it, and get to send it back up to space all over again. For the hundredth time. He continues to explain the next and most well-known characteristic of men. One I should have guessed, guys like a really pointless challenge. For instance trying to see who could go the fastest…

Gender refers to culturally constructed distinctions between femininity and masculinity. Individuals are born female or male but they become feminine or masculine through complex developmental processes that take many years to unfold. For example, women usually look after babies while men are the providers. The evolutionary approach argues that gender role division appears as an adaptation to the challenges faced by the ancestral humans in the EEA. Therefore, the role differences we observe are more a product of our biological inheritance than acquired through socialisation…

On August 2, 2016, Nicholas Kristof published in the Indiana Gazette the piece “Commentary: When Women Win, so do Men”. The main point of Kristof’s piece is that when women make milestones, it doesn’t mean men lose. He uses several examples that fit into the argumentative technique categories of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. He uses them in a successful way to make his argument valid and to persuade the reader to think in a certain way.…

    Hook ups starve the soul

Laura Vanderkam writes the essay, “Hookups Starve the Soul”. The essay explains the reality of most college students, the hookup. The main focus of the essay is to demonstrate that hookups may satisfy our physical needs, but they do not satisfy our emotional needs. Vanderkam mentions that the causes behind this could include sexual revolution or co-ed dorms and alcohol abuse, but she insists that there is a bigger picture behind all of this. Vanderkam defines the hookup and uses various definitions, stats, personal examples, experts, and examples from film and literature to support her thesis.…

    The Five Sexes, Revisited

    • 542 Words
    • 3 Pages

The reading The Five Sexes, Revisited was about the misrepresentation of today’s two-sex system in society. The central issue Anne Fausto-Sterling addresses is that there are people born outside of dimorphism and most people do not understand this (pg. 122). The most important point or central argument is that the two-sexes, male and female should no longer be accepted. Instead, five-sexes should be accepted: male, female, “herms”, “merms”, and ferms” (pg. 121). An important fact the author makes is, “…we calculated that for every 1,000 children born, seventeen are intersexual in some form” (pg. 122). This bit of information proves that there are infants born between the sexes male and female. It is important for people to realize that mixed babies are in existence. Anne Fausto-Sterling also shares a story of a born intersexual. “Consider for instance, the life of Max Beck: Born intersexual, Max was surgically assigned as a female and consistently raised as such. Had her medical team followed her into her early twenties, they would have deemed her assignment a success because she was married to a man. Within a few years, however, Beck had come out as a butch lesbian” (pg. 124). It all comes down to society and this story proves it. If the world were more open to these sex issues, then we would not have these issues in the first place. In Max’s case, being born intersexual would not have been an issue in Max’s life. Instead, the doctors chose Max’s sexuality without any consent from Max. Another interesting fact that Anne Fausto-Sterling uses to back up her argument is “The logical structure of the commonly used terms “true hermaphrodite,” “male pseudohermaphrodite” and “female pseudohermaphrodite” indicates that only the so-called true hermaphrodite is a genuine mix of male and female…Because true hermaphrodites are rare – possibly only one in 100,000 – such…

Although some students participate in random hook-ups, no one truly wants to have meaningless sex. In “89% of College Students Hate Hook-Up culture” by Susan Walsh, she describes how students usually get drunk before participating in a hook up so they do not feel guilty about their actions and do not develop feelings towards their partner. This helps them cope with their conscience about giving himself or herself to someone who they do not love. These students know they are making a poor moral choice by sleeping with someone randomly instead of waiting for love. A statistic I found startling that Walsh found was that eighty-five percent of students rarely if at all hook up. Students are pressured to fit in and due to this pressure they exaggerate about how many hook ups they have had to make themselves fit in with what they believe their friends are doing. This again is a poor moral choice. Students need to realize they shouldn’t have to lie to cover up their beliefs just so others may like them more. There are many students that have good moral values and do not even want to partake in hooking up at all. It is a major misconception that all students are hooking up and having sex. It may be true that people are not dating as much as they used too but Walsh proved that it does not mean college students are just simply hooking up to satisfy sexual pleasure. Rumors and fallacies show that college students sleep around and hook up when in reality all they really want are meaningful realtionships.…

    Gender Roles In Society

    • 741 Words
    • 3 Pages

Gender roles are expectations of how a person should act, dress, and talk based on his or her sex. A majority of people conform to these roles at an early age, and will continue to carry these beliefs, often unconsciously, around with them throughout their lives, and these beliefs can affect people negatively. The message that gender roles send is that in order to be part of society, you must fit into the predisposed mold for your gender, or most importantly, what society deems as acceptable. But at the same time, try to incorporate individuality and establish a sense of self.…
