The Beach-Personal Narrative
Quickly turning the corner, I strode down the alleyway and escaped the pandemonium of the city. The alley was dark and had an eerie look. Old vines climbed up the sides of tall apartment buildings and trash was strewn across the ground. I looked to the ground and saw a dated coca-cola bottle whose label was half gone and the glass was almost stained black. Slowly I bent down and picked up the bottle and began weighing it my hand and looking it over. Still capped and full but it did not seem to be liquid any longer. I continued walking down the alleyway, all the while flipping the glass bottle in my hand. It mesmerized me and I carried on like this for several minutes unaware of the world around me. Out the corner of my eye I noticed a stray cat pouncing on his prey. In that moment, the bottle dropped to the ground and …show more content…
It has been 10 years now and that encounter is still vivid in my memory. Looking over the railing of the pier, I see the turquoise water with small waves rippling across the surface. Scanning the pier, I quickly checked to make sure that no one is watching me and jump into the calm blue waters that lay below. Once submerged, I open my eyes and notice the small pearl-like bubbles rising and rays of sunlight streaming into the water around me. The sensation of breathing underwater remains unnerving to this day. Underneath the water lays a large expanse of coral with such an amazing array of bright and vibrant colors that it looks to have been painted; this is my destination today. Approaching the reef, I notice an assortment of lively colored fish, darting through the waters and swimming amongst the coral. For hours, I lingered, silently observing the coral reef community living together in balance and harmony. I did not fully appreciated that night so many years ago, but the ability to breathe underwater provided me with an escape from the madness in the world

I parked my car on Devon Avenue in front of Shore Galleries and took a quick glance through the car window. Shore Galleries sign was attached to the building above the main entrance and windows were completely tinted. Shore Galleries was located next to a dry cleaning business. Unless you knew the nature of business of Shore Galleries, not many people would realize that Shore Galleries is a firearms store with an indoor gun range. I sat in my car for a few minutes to clear my head and thought about things that I should pay a closer attention to once I get inside.…

She struggles against the ripping force of the ocean current. Her arms are quickly tiring from swimming against it. She relaxes, letting her muscles fall limp. Within seconds, she is pushed out to sea. The people on the beach are so small, little tiny ants against a white sand backdrop. The tall condo skyscrapers are now tiny Lego buildings. The kids hollering and music blasting on the beach is faded like a distant memory. She will die out here, she’s sure of it. Her daughter won’t have a mother’s hand to hold when learning to walk. Her husband will be left a widower, forever broken by the loss of his love. She closes her eyes and accepts her fate as she drifts further out to sea. I have always been very pleased with the items I buy at Beach Bums. I must admit that I am a little name brand snobby as in I have Lilly Pulitzer/Janie and Jack taste but a Carter's clearance budget. At beach bums I have been able to snag Janie and Jack shirts for $3-$4 (usually on clearance $15 or higher) I usually make about $200-$250 on the clothes I sold at the sale and I spend around $100 for my son's new clothes. This has been a huge help for our family with our budget for clothes, toys, etc.…

Screams pierced through the salty, humid, California air. Intimidating rides towered above me, even the thought of riding them terrifying me. Thundering waves crashed as a backdrop for the “Belmont Park” sign that about touched the clouds. Excitement and anticipation coursed through my veins. My palms turned clammy and we made our way through the never ending line to get our tickets. Wafting through the light breeze was the sweet aroma of funnel cakes, cotton candy, and hotdogs. Looking around me I knew one thing, I was determined to go on the three most daunting rides, the Giant Dipper, a hair-raising roller coaster, the Beach Blaster, sickening my stomach at the thought of it and lastly the dark looming room of extreme laser tag.…

There’s no other place in the world where I feel the most at home than being at Long Beach Island. There you can smell the fresh, salty air of the ocean as the warm breeze brushes across your face. It is a place where the sand, sometimes chilled by the water or boiling hot up in the sand dunes, fiddles its way through your toes one by one sending chills down your spine with every step. Off in the distance you can hear the chiming of bells as the ice cream men call children of all ages to cool themselves off with a frozen treat. This is the place that all summer long, I am lucky to call home.…

Almost within minutes it seemed he had arrived at Mission Beach. The sun was pretty much sky high on this early September day. He stood for a while gazing in the direction of the sand and sea. His hands were calmly by his sides. Noticing that the sun was too bright for his eyes, he slowly, with coolness about him, slid his sunglasses down from atop his head to the level of his eyes. The sunglasses were black and of a surfer brand style. Johnny could now see the details of what was happening upon the beach without squinting his eyes and forehead. This was a beach, he noticed, with diverse persons in attendance. Specifically he noticed an elderly couple walking along the sidewalk of the beach hand-in-hand, and both their hair colors were as white as…
