'The Breadwinner' By Deborah Ellis

Have you ever thought what it would be like if you were living somewhere else? Have you read a book about somewhere else, then related to it? In our class, that is what is happening to The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. She quoted this book was for “the children of war” because it has an eleven year old protagonist in Afghanistan 1996, under the control of the Taliban. Her name is Parvana, and she has similarities and even more differences in her everyday life, compared to mine. Parvana and I pretty similar, right? I mean, we both know how to read and write, Parvana says first sentence. “I can read that letter as well as father can.” She had been educated before just like me currently, and was in sixth grade. She was taught history, we know on page eleven, and on page eleven she had a test in math or arithmetic as she calls it that she wasn’t prepared for. Parvana meets her Phys ed teacher, so wouldn’t she be in Phys Ed class?
Well, no not that much. She is pretty different to me, actually. She has a one room apartment, and I have a four bedroom house. She has to pretend to be a boy so she can make money to support her family when, I don’t need to make a single cent. On page 104, Parvana and Shauzia had a plan that if they dug up bones and sold them to the bone broker, they could make way more money than ever before. Then, later on page 109, she has to use the restroom while digging up bones, and realizes she has three options, wait until she gets home, go out in the open where people may find out she is a girl, or she could use the restroom in a destroyed building, and I wouldn’t ever need to worry about that.
