In the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, one of the character's Jonny killed a soca. He ends up running away in the end. That was his first mistake. You don't run away/ flee the town if you know you didn't do anything wrong. Self-defense means that there was nothing he could have done to prevent killing Bob (the soca). (Voluntary) Manslaughter, however, refers to intentionally killing the victim without planning it. In the book, Jonny states if a soca were to ever jump him again, then he would be ready to kill them. Even with that evidence, he still hasn't planned the way, when, or how he would kill someone. He also says "yeah. His voice was quivering slightly. I had to. They were drowning you ponyboy. They might have killed you." He…

Through out one of the greatest Christmas stories of all time, it is easy to find the symbolism through the book, A Christmas C’arol. But one of my personal favorite symbolism is what the man Bob Cratchet represents along with his horrible relationship with Scrooge. The only character you feel more for Bob Cratchet is his son tiny tim. Through the first arc of the story, all you can really think of is how the mean Ebenezer Scrooge treats poor Mr. Cratchet. But what does this sad man represent. Well he represents the lower middle classes and is a symbol of how they are treated by their upper classes. But as the story kept moving we learned that there was still hope. lt is not hard to relate to the sad story of Bob Cratchet. Though he is an incredibly…

“Manny Bullpucky gets his sorry butt hurled of the Marine Park Bridge.” (Shusterman Page 1). Form the first word of the book the reader can tell that this author is a comedian, that take darker stuff and makes it funny. It’s not funny if someone is thrown off a bridge, but the author makes it seem like a funny topic. This shows how the author is going to try to make everything as comedic as possible and make the readers experience enjoyable. “Life is like a bad haircut. At first it looks awful, then you kind of get use to it, and before you know it, it grows out and you gotta get another haircut that maybe won’t be so bad, unless of course you keep going to SuperClip, where the hairstylist are so terrible that they oughta be using safety scissors, and when they’re don you look like your head got caught in a ceiling fan. So life goes on, good haircuts, bad haircuts, until you finally go bald and it doesn’t matter anymore.” (Shusterman! page 70). The author teaches life lessons with the reader really noticing because the author makes it relatable and humorous. This has an impact on the reader cause your learning philosophies and enjoying it, instead of reading a book of them in old English. “The Schwa almost had a tan in the picture, if you can believe that, and he had a smile on his face as wide as the one on the build board. An example when Alexie’s character, Jackson Jackson used humor in this story was when he was awoken from a drunken comma on the railroad tracks by a police officer. As Jackson wakes up he recognizes Officer Williams, a good white cop with a sweet tooth. “I am taking you over to detox,” Officer Williams said. “No man, that place is awful. It is full of drunken Indians.” They both laughed and drove off. “I do not know how you guys do it” he said. “What guys?” Jackson asked. “You Indians. How the hell you laugh so much? I just picked your ass off the railroad tracks, and you’re making jokes.” he said. Jackson replied, “The two funniest tribes i have ever been around are Indians and Jew, so I guess that says something about the inherent humor of genocide.” In this conversation Jackson uses humor to find laughter in a situation where Indian stereotypes say that all Indians are alcoholics. A further meaning to this is that Jackson uses humor to get past this situation. When compared to his life, multiple divorces, flunking out of college, and being a homeless alcoholic, shows his capability of moving on past events the way he laughed off the comment about drunken…

Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake follows the life of Jimmy/Snowman in a grim world of the not-so-distant future. The novel is a speculative look at the path Atwood believes our society is headed down. It features issues such as genetic engineering, global warming, food insecurity, and even child trafficking. A common element amongst these issues is that they are all dark and frightening topics. Despite this, Oryx and Crake still manages to have a multitude of hilarious moments. Some readers find these moments disruptive to the flow and seriousness of the novel, however other readers see the humour as complementary to the flow and tone; causing it to leave a deeper impact on the reader. The humour can be seen as complementary because it helps Jimmy deal with his situation, mirrors the differences between Jimmy and Crake,…

Another element that makes the novel interesting is humour. Granda’s visit to school for the Parents’ Night turns out to be hilarious. He leans forward, close to Mrs. Foley’s face, and announces, “You have got a moustache.” That remark and Mrs. Foley’s reaction, “her nose began to twitch” and the fire that is sparked by Granda’s smoking pipe adds some slapstick fun to the incident.…

The hitch hiker's appearance was described as a small ratty faced man with grey teeth, rat like eyes, slightly pointed ears, wearing a cloth hat, greyish coloured jacket with enormous pockets. In other words, he looked like a human rat. In my opinion I think that Roald Dahl describes the hitch hiker similarly to a rat so that it makes the reader assume that the hitch hiker is probably a looney-toon, murderer or some other sort of criminal. Once the reader assume that, it will make them predict that something bad or interesting will happen involving the narrator and hitch hiker.…
