1. Little Leaguers: consisting of boys’ and girls’ baseball and softball players between the ages of 6 and 15, the Little Leaguers had an annual attrition rate of just 25% (i.e., 75% customer retention) because children in Japan tended to play baseball or softball throughout their youth. This core…
In 1890, the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers professionals’ baseball team joined the National League. Over the following years, the Dodgers would have considerable difficulty competing with the other baseball themes in the New York City area. Those teams, principal among them the New York Yankees, were much better financed and generally stocked with players of higher caliber. In 1958, after nearly seven decades of mostly frustration on and off the baseball field, the Dodgers shocked the sports world by moving to Los Angeles. Walter O’Malley, the flamboyant owner of the Dodgers, saw an opportunity to introduce professional baseball to the rapidly growing population of the West Coast. More important, O’Malley saw an opportunity…
In Chapter 5 , “ Bling, Bombs, and the Bible”, in the book called Game On: How Pressure to Win at all costs Endangers youth sports, author Tom Farrey claims that children can benefit from participation in sports even though the sports are not highly competitive. In order to support this claim Farrey shares the personal story of former General Electric CEO Jack Welch. Welch described the casual baseball games that he played with his friends when he was growing up in Salem, Massachusetts. These games were not organized by adults; they included players of all ability levels; and did not have a formalized league structure. However, it does appear that Welch and his friends gained important leadership and negotiation skills as a result of the participation…

It’s the 1940’s; 1944 to be exact. You’ve been drifting in and out of a variety of camps, struggling to stay as alive and hopeful as possible. The days and nights are starting to blend together into a gray smudge, and your will to live is beginning to dissipate. This was the constant struggle of the Jewish people during the second World War. Every waking moment was spent in constant fear and misery, Now, does that compare to being taken from your home and having to pursue your own entertainment? Two children, Elie and Shorty, survived these trials and lived to tell the tale. In “Night”, by Elie Wiesel, and “Baseball Saved Us”, by Ken Mochizuki, both of the main characters experienced things that changed the way they viewed a variety of subjects.…
The Black Sox Scandal was one of the oldest scandals in the professional sports industry. In 1919, Chicago White Sox did match fixing in the World Series, which determined the best professional baseball team in the year. Because of the Black Sox Scandal, eight players in the Chicago White Sox were banned from the Major League Baseball. This scandal was very shocking to people because professional sports, especially baseball, was consecrated for people at that time. People think there is no cheating in the fields because one of the most important ideas of sports was fairness. However, because of the Black Sox Scandal, people value of sports was completely changed. People doubted about the professional sports and thought the value of professional…
Being a colored person in the early 1920’s was not an easy situation. Trying to play baseball in a integrated national league was even worse. Black people overcame a lot before being able to play in an integrated league, from having to organize their own leagues to the breaking point when finally they were allowed to play in a white league.…
During World War 2, many big band members were drafted or volunteered to join the war effort. Big bands lost some of their great members, and thus big bands came to an end. Swing music, which was very popular during the war, died out at the end of the war. This happened because swing music was a reminder of the war and many people who were sad about the war tuned out swing or turned it off.…
During the 1940’s in the face of World War II the United States faced a crisis, the majority of every abled body man over the age of 18 either enlisted or was drafted into the military. With all the men leaving for war who was left to play baseball, since baseball had no exemption of the draft deemed by President Roosevelt. These put women in a tough spot, stay at home as women had done for years or leave the house and venture out for jobs. In my opinion the movie A League of Their Own which depicts the story of the AAGPBL, All American Girls Professional Baseball League, as they helped keep baseball alive during the war. The movie showed the brutality, bad conditions, and challenges faced by the women of the league; but did it depict the character of the players and managers?…
When World War One came to a close, individuals were in demand for excitement and entertainment. This singular and special era was known as the “Golden Age of Sports.” The main reason it was known as the Golden Age was because of numerous superstar athletes were rising in stardom in a variety of sports. Even Though the sport of baseball was the center of attention, other sports such as tennis, swimming, boxing, and football were also great sports that got the attention of a significant number of Americans across the nation. The sport of baseball itself, and many individuals gave in to these movements and made a huge impact in U.S.…
If I had to choose on even that will have significance in my life it would have to be “The Great Recession”. The economic turmoil that started in early 2008 by the fall of Bearn Stern the 4th largest Investment Banking firm in the U.S. followed by the collapse of Leman Brothers in September of 2008 has led to the worst recession since the World War II and has been called The Great Recession. Being 31 years old and having witnessed recessions before as well as transformation of our economic system to service sector over the years from manufacturing as well as outsourcing of millions of job, I personally think this recession will have significant impact in our country in respect to our economic policies, political reform, historical implications, diplomatic matters with our trading partners, and also sociological and psychological effects as well.…
A) The United States of America is the largest and still the most important market in the world. But it did crash a couple of years ago and it’s now trying to recover from this. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is usually a quite good indicator of the standards of living of a country. It can be measured in two ways: The total expenditure on goods and services or by the total of income earned by producing goods and services. The actual GDP of the United States is 14 62 trillions of US dollars, that is a growth of 2.7% from last year. But to have a better idea of the standard of living of a country, it is more relevant to take a look at the GDP per Habitat, which is 47, 400$. The GDP growth is 3.1% now so it’s higher than the inflation rate. And if we take a look at the past two years, the GDP growth was always positive so the government were quite successful in this domain.…
“The slugger’s come home” is an explicative and demonstrative video that represents an example of a negotiation process.
