The Controversy: A Short Story
Six weeks into the apprenticeship, I decided to vista my Mother and try to re-solve our conflict. Typically our usual way of greeting each other consisted of a hug and a peck on the cheek, however when I approached she pushed me away when she caught sight of the miniature Sailor Jerry tattoo, on my left earlobe. Instantly, she kicked into ballistic mode. While she screamed absurdities, I stood there thinking, if a tiny tattoo received that kind of reaction, what she would do, if she caught a glimpse of the arm sleeve hidden beneath my long sleeve shirt.

The little girl ran into a wall. This was not an unusual occurrence but it was a painful one and the young child began to cry. Her mother didn’t help her, nor did her father – they were on a business trip to Peru. The wall felt sorry for the girl but (being an inanimate object) there was not much it could do to help so it just sat there. “Poor soul” it whispered, the sound of its voice melting into the waves of the wind, never to be heard again.…

The outbreak of World War I happened over 100 years ago, and we have fairly accurate idea of what happened between 1914 and 1918 as there are records and written work telling us how the war went along. However, war is more than just a record; there were all kinds of drama and stories from each individual. The story and controversy of Billy Bishop involves different interpretation and view of remaining evidence. But the thing is, we will never know every detail of those stories by looking at records. No matter how detailed the records are, there were too many variables that could’ve affected one’s decision in war.…

The internal conflict in "The Colomber" by Dino Buzzati happens within Stefano. The idea of that hostile creature waiting for him day and night became a secret obsession for Stefano. And even in the distant city it crept up to wake him with worry in the middle of the night. He was safe, of course; hundreds of kilometers separated him from the colomber. And yet he knew that beyond the mountains, beyond the forests and the plains, the shark was waiting for him. He might have moved even to the most remote continent, and still the colomber would have appeared in the mirror of the nearest sea, with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal…

In literature, there are four types of major conflicts, and in many cases these conflicts are beyond the characters control. These four types of conflicts are man versus another man, for example in The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, a major man versus man conflict are the rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. Another conflict is man versus nature, where a person is in trouble with a force of nature, like a tornado, or in this case a fire. Man versus society is where a character has conflicts with society’s views on “outsiders” and people who do not fit in. An man versus self, is where a character struggles against him or herself, with unwanted feelings. The main types of conflict that can be found in this book are, man versus man, man versus…

A viewer’s experience and understanding of a story can be changed by such of In the novel, A Separate Peace you get a clear idea of who is telling the story. Gene functions as your interpreter of the story--he offers a narrative that connects a reader with the book. The use of a narrator in the book helps to draw in a reader and generates sympathy, which makes the story more meaningful. In the movie, the director chose not to use this technique. Instead of using a narrator, the director chose to create a wall between the viewer and the story, which served a different purpose. Rather than pull a reader in to experience the story directly, the director chose to create some distance, which allowed the viewers to keep an open mind about all…

In the early 1900s, there was a time in which the ways of the people were changing in America. In this era, there was a group of people that successfully changed America and brought the problems to the people. These people were known as the Progressives. Nevertheless, the progressives would not have changed nearly as much without the help of the muckrakers. They were a group of journalists that exposed problems. My paper is about three main things like urban poor living conditions, child labor, and the conditions of food. I feel that these were horrible problems and were addressed the way they were supposed to be. The way Muckrakers in the 1900’s and journalists today showed these problems were similar.…

I strongly agree with the statement “there is no literature without conflict”. It applies well to the play Antigone by Jean Anouilh. The most significant conflict exists between Antigone and Creon the king. Despite this major conflict, there is also another minor conflict between Antigone and Ismene. Conflicts do not have to be between two people. A good example would be whether or not to obey the law, when Antigone decides whether she should take the risk and try to bury her deceased brothers. In Creon’s point of view, he has to have a conflict to make up his mind whether or not, and how Antigone will be punished after she violates his command. All these conflicts contribute the play a central idea and provide the play with a clear plot.…

On my birthday, the seventh of May, my mother, the eminent, Whitney West Scooter, almost had a major myocardial infarction. After, I told her that her aspiring Michelangelo had with-drawn from her alma mater the illustrious J. C. West Institute of Fine Arts. Throughout break-fast, lunch, and dinner, I tried to explain to her that the reason I left the Institute, at the end of my junior year, was to accept a generous offer put forth by Tommy Hagsmight, an iconic tattoo artist and owner of the multinational corporation, ‘Ink It Baby.” My mother, of course, didn’t care one iota, that Tommy would personally mentor me during my three year apprenticeship or that the corporation had agreed to pay for the apprenticeship program, license, seminars,…
