The Controversy Of Lowering The Voting Age
Personally, I believe the Voting age should stay at 18 years old. Today's teenagers aren't well informed on politics and most young adults don't even bother to show up on election day. Lowering the age could have a negative effect on both our percentage of participation and the quality of elected canidates. I believe there are better ways of increasing voter turnout. In Belgium it's a requirement by law to vote and their voter turnout is a whopping 93%! If we implemented this in the U.S. it might encourage young people to stay informed and elect better canidates. Most young people believe voting is a joke saying, "Two sides of the same cruddy coin, so why vote for either?" or "Electoral Colleges make our votes insignificant,

Mandatory voting has a possibility of leading to random votes. Mandatory voting has a possibility of leading to random votes because many citizens are either uneducated about politics or they are apolitical, meaning that they don’t care about politics. If there was mandatory voting then people would have to vote even though they don’t want to. In fact, this is because people who are apolitical just don’t care about voting and many other people don’t usually know about any other candidates, so they don’t vote. Stated in document 2, lines 24 and 25, Maria Gretschew wrote, “It has been proved that forcing the population to vote results in an increased number of invalid and blank votes”. This means that if citizens were forced to vote there would…

As the nation stands, only about 30-50 percent of the United States has voted for a presidential candidate since 2000. A disappointment it is to only have at most about half of the US vote being that it has the third largest population in the world. However, to resolve this dilemma, the idea of mandatory voting could be used to help get the voice of the whole nation out. The need of mandatory is immense for it will better represent the population of America, level the playing field of candidate parties, and it will give the incentive for more informed voting causing the better quality of voters.…

One thing is, since they lowered the voting age, we must take this for granted. What I mean is that if you have the privilege to vote, then do so. It is your responsibility as an American citizen to choose who you want, and trust to control our country. Voting isn't something you just say, “Oh, whoops, forgot to vote today… Eh, I’ll just do it next time.”…

Due to recent studies the United States has been uncovered in having one of the best voter satisfaction rates in the world. However, the United States has one of the lowest voter turnout rates. In countries such as Australia there are penalties for citizens who do not vote and have a low voter satisfaction rate. America does not deserve the punishment of compulsory voting as it does not improve government climate, non-voters tend to be uneducated politically, and compulsory voting requires a data base.…

Some people claim lowering the voting age will help, but in reality it won’t. They say that it will increase younger voters. But 16 yr olds aren’t going to vote without a knowledge of politics. They also claim that the country needs more voters. The problem with that is you are putting the responsibility of much greater power than 16 yr olds can handle into their hands. Who knows what they’ll do with it!…

In todays world, about 48% of people vote. Most of those voters are around the age of 60. I find it sad that young adults aren't very excited about being able to exercise their civic right. In his book, An Economic Theory of Democracy, Anthony Downs writes about the pros and cons of voting. The pros simply being that if you canadite wins then they get to put into action all the plans he/she had which compeled you to vote for them. The cons being that we would have to resaruch the canadates to see which one believes the same thing you believe, we would have to drive to the place were you vote, if it is raining or cold outside you would have to bundal up. So the reason americans don't vote is simply because we are lazy.…

So many teenagers under the age of 18 and many adults too argue that the government should drop the voting age to 16 instead of 18. They say that this would instantly improve the voting participation percentages. I do not fully agree with this because the percentage of people who are 18 and older is so much greater to the percentage of people from 16-17 years of age and I do not believe that allowing people two more years younger would improve the voting participation percentage that much. I do believe that people under the age of 18 should start having some sortof poltical opinions because yes it is their future too, but I believe that the problem of the voting turn out isnt because 16 and 17 year olds arent allowed to vote,…

16 year olds are very immature when it comes to politics. “Young adults indeed in many cases are profoundly ignorant about politics” (Brennan). Many people believe that the voting age should be lowered, also many people think that 16 year olds are too immature to vote. “Most scientist agree that youngsters in their mid teens aren't suited to politics” (West). Although many people believe that 16 year olds should vote studies show that 16 year olds are not ready in age and maturity to vote yet.…

In my opinon, the voting age should be lower than 18. Why? This will help with the population of votes rise higher then it did before; we need a balance. It will also encourage younger voters to get involve with participating in elections. Plus, other countries are already doing it, and it has got them an increase number of votes.…

The Government should lower the voting age to 16. The voting age should be lowered because it gives a better estimate on the citizen's choice. Now, only 60-70 percent of American citizens vote, if 16 years olds could vote in the presidential election would be more accurate. Some say 16 year olds are not informed enough and they could be easily swayed.…
