The Crematoria Case Study
The crematoria made for the mass killings and incineration in the Holocaust had to come from somewhere. The firm, Topf & Sohn (of Erfurt), were responsible for the machines that would soon help the Nazis burn the bodies of victims of the Holocaust. Ludwig Topf, CEO of the firm, committed suicide after being blamed for being an accessory in the crime claiming that he was under no fault and it was an injustice to be persecuted. His brother Ernst-Wolfgang did escape persecution and tried to restart the business which failed due to bankruptcy.

    The short story “The Death of Schillinger” was a story about a First Sergeant whom ruled over labor sector ‘D,’ a laboring portion of Birkenau which was formally known as the Auschwitz extermination camp. Schillinger was a short stocky man and was truly evil at his essence; “He visited the crematoria regularly and liked to watch people being shoved into the gas chambers.” (pp.144) One day in August of 1943, the SS were unloading a transport and preparing to load stripped Jews into the gas chambers. However, before this could be done Schillinger took a liking to one of the nude women and grabbed her out of line; she threw gravel in his eyes, grabbed his revolver, and shot him several times. After being fatally wounded Schillinger was repeatedly asking himself, “My God, what have I done to deserve such suffering?” (pp.146) Later that day several Sonderkommandos attempted to rally a revolt at the crematoria, however all were killed by German SS soldiers via machine gun. I believe the theme of this short story is that death was so prominent in Birkenau that no one, even the sergeants, were safe. While Schillinger may have been truthfully ignorant to his ways, I believe the death of the Sonderkommandos symbolized the lack of justice in Auschwitz. Even though the evil Sergeant was killed, by no means did that suggest the innocent would escape or achieve their vengeance.…

    Rudolf Hoess was architect and commandant of the largest killing ever created. The death camp was called Auschwitz. On May 1, 1940, Rudolf was appointed commandant of a camp in western poland. The camp was built near a town called Oswiecim. Hoess was commandant for three and a half years. He expanded the original facility which went into a sprawling complex name by Auschwitz. September 3, 1941 Hoess began his job after visiting Treblinka and learning about how they did human extermination. Rudolf made Auschwitz better than Treblinka by making his gas chambers bigger to kill 2,000 people rather than 200 at a time. Hoess tried a lot of different ways of gassing the Jews. In the early days he used cotton soaked with sulfuric acid then he introduced hydrogen cyanide which killed people within three to fifteen. He said “we knew they were dead because they stopped screaming.” In the last days of the war, Himmler told Hoess to disguise himself among the German Navy personnel. He got away from being arrested for years. On March 11, 1946, he was arrested by British troops. He was disguised as a farmer as he called himself Franz Lang.…

    The first crematoria installed in the camps were oil fueled Heinrich Kori single muffle mobile ovens and Topf & Sohne oil fueled mobile double muffle ovens. These types of ovens had been in manufacture for a number of years and used in for example agriculture for burning debris, animal carcasses etc. They were relatively easy to produce and install. Mobile crematoria of these types were installed in Sachsenhausen. These ovens were not built for mass incinerations and as the body count in the camps grew after 1941 became totally inadequate. The camps looked for larger and more efficient capacity. They therefore asked Kori and Topf to design more permanent structures with greater capacity that could also use a less expensive fuel than the oil. These companies designed cheaper and more cost effective ovens from the existing designs of the more expensive ovens used in the municipal crematoria.
