Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare. Many people believe that if you say “Macbeth” inside a theatre, it releases a curse on you and the production (“Schumm”). There are many theories as to why there is a curse; one theory is that Shakespeare included actual black magic spells in the dialogue of the weird sisters. In fact one of the many film directors, Justin Kurzel, said that,”you could feel all the Macbeths that have died there and many wars” …show more content…
(Curse). Others believe that a production more than 400 years of being staged is bound to have its fair share of accidents and curses. The play partly acquired its evil reputation because of the weird sisters and partly because tradition traces a long line of disasters back to its premier on August 7, 1606. The most interesting theory is that the play contains the devil in the form of the porter in the play. It is supposed to be bad luck to quote from the play or to use any sets, costumes, or props from a production (Curse-Macbeth). It is believed that the curse causes things to go wrong with the production of Macbeth. For example, causing the production to get cancelled because their lead actor got ill. Therefore, people often refer “Macbeth” as “The Bard’s Play”, "that play”, “the unmentionable" or “The Scottish Play” (“Schumm”). That way they can avoid the curse. There are many theories as to why people believe the play is cursed, but we may never know the truth. This curse people fear may just be made up but maybe it’s actually real and curses anyone who speaks the word “Macbeth.” Maybe next time you should avoid saying “Macbeth.”
There are multiple ways that are believed to reverse the curse. One way is going outside spinning around three times, spit and knock begging pardon for the transgression (Curse). It's also believed that if you go outside and spin around three times while saying all the curse words you know, it would reverse the curse. The most common remedy to get rid of the curse is that the offender must step outside, turn around three times, spit, and say the foulest word he/she can think of, and wait for permission to re-enter the theatre (Curse-Macbeth). It is so weird how there is a curse from “Macbeth” and it still occurs today. Theses theories are suppose to reverse the curse and prevent anything bad happening during the production.
The curse caused many events to happen surrounding Macbeth.
In fact, a leading boy actor playing Lady Macbeth died backstage on opening night. The production was cancelled. Marion Cotillard was unable to attend the red carpet walking because she was too ill to attend (Curse). It also caused one man to jump off a balcony during intermission for Macbeth and kill himself. He was 82 years old (Double). During one performance in 1849, a riot occurred killing more than 30 people (Macbeth). Another riot followed a protest killing more than 20 people. In one week in 1934 4 different actors had to play the role of Macbeth. The first actor, Malcolm Keen, lost his voice. The second actor developed pneumonia. Marius Goring was fired, so John Laurie took the part. In just one week it took 4 actors to play one part, because someone slipped the word. The actor of Duncan was murdered on stage when the fake dagger was replaced with a real dagger (Harrod). Through all these years

The curse of Macbeth has caused many disasters and deaths and cancelled shows. Ever since 1623 people believe that the play is haunted and cursed. People have been killed, seriously injured, ill, there has been riots, fires and suicides. It seems like just auditioning for a part is a bad idea. But maybe all this curse stuff is not really and it’s just in our heads. This curse doesn't just affect the actors in the play but also the audition, so be careful what you say.
