The Danger Of A Single Story
These are 3 powerful quotes from The Danger of a Single Story that made me rethink how I will consider a story in the future:

- “So that is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become. “

- “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”

- “The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar.”

1. The danger of a single story is that our perception of what is real can be impacted when we only get one side of a story. There are at least 2 sides to every story, often 3, 4, 5 or more. Consider politics today with the upcoming elections and how each candidate that is running usually only wants to present the story that supports their position. Stories can overcome this by presenting different perspectives from various viewpoints to try and get the whole picture and not just what the writer believes.

What was powerful to me was that Adichie gave us believable examples of how the single story can skew your thinking. She grew up reading American and British children’s books and when she started to write, she emulated the characters in those books because that’s all she knew. It was until she obtained African books that she realized there could be people just like herself written about in books. She talked about her preconceived perceptions of the “poor” boy who worked for her family and how after she visited his village realized you could be poor and hard working. Another example was how her college roommate in the US was surprised that Adichie spoke English, could use a stove and that her favorite music was Mariah Carey. I found Adichie to be

In the eighth chapter of Dubner and Levitt's book, Think Like a Freak, the authors promote the idea of persuading those who do not wish to be persuaded by telling the audience a good and convincing story. According to Dubner and Levitt, “if [the reader] really want[s] to persuade someone who doesn't wish to be persuaded, [the reader] should tell [his or her audience] a story” (162). A convincing story also needs to be cohesive; the story should have “a daisy chain of events, to show the causes that lead up to a particular situation and the consequences that result from it” (Dubner and Levitt 163). The authors wrote their book by providing the reader with numerous stories; as the book progresses, they use examples of the weighty decisions…

"Conflict is the fundamental element of fiction...In life, conflict often carries a negative connotation, yet in fiction, be it comic or tragic, dramatic conflict is fundamental because in literature only trouble is interesting. Only trouble is interesting. This is not so in life." Janet Burroway's point is very true, and is basically the main theme in chapter three of Gottschall's, The Storytelling Animal. Even though people don't…

“It ain’t whatcha write, it’s the way atcha write it.” (Jack Kerouac). Many things can make a story interesting, the context is not always the most important. The way a writer tells the story is often what hooks the reader, by creating intriguing and eventful dialogue that attracts the reader. Bundles of information can be helpful in giving the reader insight to the characters life. However that information can only keep a reader attracted for so long as the reader desires a dramatic or traumatic event to occur.…

According to Edgar Alan Poe, a short story should be like a window into someone else’s life, in other words it doesn’t really matter what happened before and it doesn’t matter what’s going to happen after. The authors of the short stories I have read in class this year, using only that window, have made me feel sorry for the characters and angry towards the resentment the rest of the community shows them because they are different from others. Reading White & witchetty, the Dolls House and Josie has made me question my own values and beliefs.…

A true sign of a great story is the theme or message that the author is trying to get across. The theme that the author is trying to get across is how they see it, but the way that them reader sees it may be something totally different. “My Side of the Story” and “Everything Will Be Ok”. The next story turns out to be a story about stories. This story tells us (the reader) the importance of stories, and that they aren’t merely for entertainment, but are used to fight off death and illness. The narrator then states, “You don’t have anything, if you don’t have the stories.” Thus telling us the true importance of the stories of Native American culture, seeing as everything was passed down orally, and not much was written down if any at all (2).…

It makes people less judgemental and it brings people closer together. When someone has more than one perspective on a situation, it makes them not stereotype as much if they know the full story. This is true for Chimamanda Adichie and The Danger of a Single Story because she always is learning new information to gain as many perspectives on things as possible. The man in The Allegory of the Cave who comes into the light sees reality as it really is and realizes that his previous view on life was all a lie and he is reconnected with the rest of the world outside the cave. The woman in The Lunch Date is not similar to the previous stories but is infact an opposing side which shows what people must avoid when becoming critical thinkers. All of these stories are connected in a way that they all demonstrate on how to and not to be a critical thinker. They show that a critical thinker should always try to gain as much knowledge as possible before making assumptions and forming a…

With each decision we make, we add a new page to our story. You are the main character of your story, just as I am the main character of mine. As the main characters, we write the story how we want it to be told. Who are the other characters? What purpose do they serve? What kind of person are you? Are you willing to take the risk to change? Line by line, we answer each of these questions through our thoughts and through our actions. Make the decision today, in this moment, to abandon self-instincts, to have integrity, to make impossible connections. Only by doing this are we able to write the story tomorrow will tell. I don’t know yet if I will change the world or change my mind, but whatever I do, I know the story will be completely…
