This is how I view TED talks. TED talks are twenty minutes of interesting and often funny stories of global issues and life lessons to inform the public. Chimamanda Ngozi’s TED talk does exactly that. I learned so much from The Danger of a Single Story. I try to stay informed of the global news. I consider myself to know more about the world than the average American and I try to experience other cultures. However, just like Ngozi I too suffer from single story syndrome. Growing up in the United States means I was always told the poor them stories by my mother, the media, and the government. You always hear about starving children Africa and poor economies in South America. It was not until I studied international affairs at Florida State that I learned about stories outside of popular media of Asian, African, and South American countries. From Ngozi’s TED talk I learned the importance of not believing the single story. Keeping an open mind is pertinent to warding off obtuseness. I also learned the importance of representation in literature. When Ngozi and several other Nigeran author created representative literature, it empowered the people of their country to think creatively and expand their
