The Devil’s Arithmetic was written by Jane Yolen. The story starts off as a girl named Hannah was complaining to her mother about not wanting to go to the Seder. She is named after her Aunt Eva’s dead friend, Chaya. When she gets to the Seder, she is chosen to open the door for the prophet Elijah. When she does that she finds herself in a different house. It starts out in a tattoo parlour and Hannah would like to get a tattoo on her ankle. Then she realizes that she is late for the Seder and drive to her house to get ready. She then asks her mother why she has to go, complaining at every chance she gets. At the Seder she is chosen to open the door for Elijah and is then found in a house where a girl claims that she is Hannah’s cousin. Her name is Rivka. She goes to the wedding and are told to get in the trucks by the Nazis. While in the trucks Ariel falls in love with Hannah and asks her on a date. Soon they are at the concentration camp are rushed to work. After a while of being at the camp a group tries to escape and are hung. To make everyone feel better they have a Seder in their house. After the Seder Rivka tells Hannah that she is going to change her name to Eva when she gets out of the camp. Rivka then gets sick and the Nazis kill the sick, but Hannah disguises herself as Rivka so Rivka can live. Then she dies and is taken back to modern times. She tells Aunt Eva what she now knows and Aunt Eva wonders how she knows that. Then Aunt Eva shows Hannah a picture of Aunt Eva and Chaya
