The Divergent Argument Essay
INTRODUCTION
In completing the assigned case study for this course, I decided to study and analyse the movie entitled The Divergent as it captivated my intention in studying youth from the perspective of globalised world. In this modern society, youth has been discussed as a subject matter in comparative researches all over the world. It is vital for us to study youth because of its complexity in sociology studies. Youth is known as a group of people who have passed the childhood phase and yet to be the adults. The definition of youth itself is complicated and thus I believe that the study of youth must be done thoroughly so that people in the society nowadays do not misinterpret youth from their point of views. Socialization occurs with “the formation of social groups and the development of the forms of association and the development of a social nature in individuals (Martin,2007). I believe family is one of the agents of socialization that helps youth to develop their identities before they become adults. However, based on the movie The Divergent, it stressed on the function of peers as the agent of socialization. As mentioned by Crisogen (2015), “informal socialization agents included friends and colleagues”. Tris in The Divergent chose not to follow her parents’ faction which is Abnegation because she felt like not becoming herself if she joined Abnegation. As a result, Tris joined Dauntless even though she did not know anyone yet when she decided to get into Dauntless. This proves that Tris as a youth does not depend on her family to socialize, instead she made friends and became a tougher girl than she was as she joined the Dauntless …show more content…
The movie Divergent helped me in understanding youth as I see youth as complicated before. I am grateful that I had the chance to watch Divergent because it was my first time hearing such five-factions system and it is beyond amazing that I see these factions so called Dauntless, Erudite, Amity, Candor and Abnegation as unique factions that have their own values and practices. I would like to stress again that I agree if the modern society nowadays divide members of the society into different factions because they will get to choose which faction suits them the best and they can live without having any personality disturbance especially among the youth. It might be hard to build such society, but at the very least, I hope the society would take into consideration regarding youth nowadays as they are still in the process of finding their true identities and they need someone to bring them back into realities every time they lost in their daily imaginations. Thus, this movie does give me a new experience in understanding youth and I also get to apply the theories that I have learnt in understanding the Divergent movie by comparing it with the youth in the society nowadays in the positive way
