In present-day society, the problem of pollution is increasingly severe worldwide ,the climate is becoming worse and people are lack of the consciousness of protecting the environment.Under this circumstance, the WWF and Leo Burnett (2007)conceived an event called “The Earth Hour” ,in order to heighten people’s awareness of environmental conservation. In this report,we focus on what does the Earth Hour bring to us and its effect.
The Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) in 2007 and held towards the end of March annually, encouraging households and business to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. The event first originated in Sydney,Australia.Following Sydney’s lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008.According to the report, the event took place in more than 7000 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories, making it the biggest growth year for the campaign since 2009.
Though The Earth Hour continues to expand its scale and more and more people are participate in it, there is still some problems we have to face and make a further consideration. For instance, Bjron Lomborg(2009),author of The Skeptical Environmentalist, wrote, “It is vital to make solar and other new technology cheaper than fossil fuels quickly so we can turn off carbon energy sources for a lot longer than one hour and keep the planet running...”Thus,we have to doubt the origin propose of this event. Are we organized this event in order to enhance the awareness of environmental protection or we just to attract the other people's attention?
