Having good coordination and dexterity is a key trait when working in any branch of the dental field, especially good hand-eye coordination. When working with needles and sharp objects in a patient’s mouth it is essential to have the necessary skill sets to steady yourself and perform precise oral procedures. An orthodontist must have good time management. Just as a regular doctor or dentist, an orthodontist has a full schedule of patients to see day-in and day-out so in order for an orthodontist to keep up with all patients, one must have an organized, detailed management system. A good time management thing to do is to have one day of the work week with no patients and write up diagnoses and other documents. An orthodontist must have the ability to differentiate different diseases from one another. If the orthodontist were to mess up and diagnose a patient with a gum disease that requires tissue surgery only to find out that one of the patient’s teeth had a cavity, the orthodontist will probably be in high waters to say the least. Lastly, a required skill an orthodontist must have is monitoring skills. In general, one must pass the regional or national dental board examinations and show documented proof of fulfillment in dental school and the orthodontic residency program before getting a license. Another requirement is exam and application fees that can range from $300 to $600 depending on where you live. In the state of Florida, in order to get a license to practice orthopedic procedures, it states on the Florida Board of Dentistry, one must be eighteen years of age or older, graduated a dental school that has been authorized by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation or by the United States Department of Education, and have completed the Dental National Board Examination, the Florida Laws and Rules Examination, and the ADEX Dental Licensing Examination successfully (Florida Board Of Dentistry, 2015).
