The Effectiveness of Sunlight in Removing Odor and Mildew From Clothes
Abstract
This project was done to enhance an individual image through body scent. Past odour-related journals were analysed and found that the bacteria and mildew are the cause of the odour.
Hence, this current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the sunlight in removing the odour and mildew and finding alternatives in replacement of sunlight by using salt, vinegar and baking soda. In the experimental procedures, dynamo was added to five sweaty shirts.
Salt, vinegar and baking soda were then added to the three shirts respectively during washing.
Repeatedly, the experiment was carried out in sunny, cloudy and windy conditions to obtain a better accuracy in results. The comparisons were then made between the shirts dried under sunlight and the shirts which were added with additives, dried indoor with proper ventilation.
It was observed that the shirts laundered under sunlight were in absence of odour and mildew.
Similarly, the three addictives were able to remove the odour and mildew under the condition without sunlight and vinegar was found to be a stronger additive, followed by salt and then baking soda. In short, sunlight, vinegar and salt were more effective than baking soda in inhibiting the growth of mildew and bacteria and eliminating the odour from washed clothes.
The obtained results will allow households to have better alternatives during rainy days to remove the odour of washed clothes. Lastly, future research can focus on the identification of mildew on washed clothes in the interests’ of the society.

HCl acid, historically called, muriatic acid or spirits of salt, hydrochloric acid is produced from sulfuric acid and common salt, NaCl (Princeton.edu). Since the early 1900 's, sodium benzoate has been used as a food preservative (SolarNavigator). The results from the experiment showed bacterial growth in all groups.(control, polyester, and cotton) Bacterial growth was most significant within the first 7 days, but eventually the growth seemed to slow. This slower paced growth could have been directly related to the consumption of the agar, food source, earlier in the experiment by the bacteria. Overall results showed that the polyester socks had more bacterial growth than the cotton socks. As referenced in the background information bacteria causes foot odor, and the fact that the polyester had more bacterial growth indicates that the polyester would smell worse.…
