The Eskimo Snow Hoax
The important lesson that all should learn from the Eskimo snow hoax is that it is not sufficient to rely on one research, as renowned as the researcher would be (Whorf in our case). When we come across research findings, we need to cross reference them with other research findings and refrain from taking them for granted. Furthermore we should review our beliefs and check their validity from time to time (Like with “the truth about dinosaurs”).
Despite the prominence of some claims, each hypothesis should be broadly tested by each researcher before taking them as an axiom. Unfortunately the large majority of writers, especially publicists and journalists still cite the factoid uncritically and may be willing to stretch the truth. It seems

In March of 1992, Dr. Richard Sanford wrote an outspoken paper opposing the claims of the global warming hysteria of recent time. Sanford discusses how people accept global warming theories as scientific fact without questioning their validity. I can honestly say that I was one of these people who agreed with the media's interpretation of these theories. After reviewing the pro global warming material in the course text, Environmental Science, written by G. Tyler Miller, and reading several articles on the opposition of global warming, I find myself becoming not a hardcore skeptic, but someone that will no longer take information at face value without reviewing as many of the particulars as possible.…

    Fred Singer Argument

The vast amount of opposing views from qualified scientists on global warming can easily confuse any reader. The manipulation of data is a main culprit, which is largely to blame for the confusion. This tactic, carefully used by global warming skeptics, falsely makes information appear to prove that global warming does not exist. Fred Singer’s 10 year graph, which shows no rise in global temperatures is a perfect example. While the 10 years Singer has selected show no warming in temperature, when the graph is viewed in its entirety there is a substantial warming trend. This term is known as “going down the up escalator” (Upin) and is used as an attempt to prove global warming does not exist. This is very dangerous because while skeptic’s present…

A common misconception is that statistics provide a measure of proof that something is true. Instead, statistics provide a measure of the probability of observing a certain result. It is easy to misuse the statistics in data analysis even to the point of misconception because statistics do not introduce systematic error which can be introduced into the data intentionally or accidentally. There are many associated variables in statistical numbers that the person analyzing the data does not see, and without further explanation or supportive data, one can easily come to the wrong conclusion and the scientist data could be presented as facts rather than probability. If the source from which the data was gathered was not factual, then this will reflect a statistic that is misleading, biased, and based on false information, but those persons who might later interpret the data had no idea that the source was not factual, and as a result wrong information is publicized. Because statistics deal with numbers they often seem to be more convincing and less suspicious of false claim than descriptive arguments, but numbers can be easily manipulated in favor of someone’s opinion.…

This brevity also means the studies are relatively cheap to carry out, thus people will more likely fund cheaper studies and so theorists will be more able to test their hypothesises, that is, easier funding means the possibility of carrying out more tests!…

For example, as in the article ¨´Ńo Pass/No Drive´: The Answer To High School Drop-out Rates?¨ the author references a study done in 2000 that proved No pass/No drive to be successful in lowering student dropout rates. The author wrote ¨One study in 2000, found that, in kentucky, lower performing counties were able to lower their dropout rates to match better performing counties when they used the ´no pass/no drive´ policies¨ (pg.6). This shows, inarguably, that schools with the no pass/no drive law in operation have lower dropout rates.…

Sometimes careless science publishing can weaken the public’s confidence in science and the government. The Media is enormously powerful and leading and will influence people’s opinions on everything. There are plenty of stories in the media that will change the public’s perception of science or even make them see a new perception. Sometimes these stories are just written to scare the public into believing a certain thing just so they can sell their stories.…

In regards to climate change, it is often believed that the “hockey stick” graph is the only indication of detriment humans have caused to the world. So if someone can disprove the data from the graph, it is believed that all of climate change can be invalidated. However, Michael Mann refutes this belief wholeheartedly; the graph is based on data he and his colleagues comprised. To him this mistake in the public’s opinion was created on purpose to easily disregard the idea of climate change being true by those who are financially involved in industries that rely on destroying the planet to succeed. Mann emphasizes that even if you want to completely revoke the “hockey stick” graph, there are “a number of independent lines of evidence” that cannot be disregarded such as the “Detection and Attribution Studies”(76). Since he believes that this is attack on him and his data, he…
