At approximately 3:10 on Friday afternoon, Tybalt approached Mercutio and Romeo in the park. Witnesses say it did not take long for the conversation to get heated. Tybalt instigated the physical fighting, and was given a clear shot at Mercutio when Romeo tried to end the brawl. Mercutio suffered stab wounds to his left lung and died at approximately 3:20. Benvolio, a Montague, was a witness to the violence. "Tybalt just wanted to fight, and Mercutio wasn't going to back down. It was so unnecessary. Mercutio had so much to live for and so much left to do. I hope that the Montagues and the Capulets can learn from this tragedy and put their petty feud behind them. Tybalt fled the park immediately after killing Mercutio.
He then returned to the scene of the crime at approximately 3:25, where Romeo challenged him to a fight. Romeo killed Tybalt at approximately 3:28. Lady Capulet, aunt to Tybalt, said, "Romeo slew Tybalt, Romeo must not live." Montague, however, had a very different reaction to Romeo's actions. "His fault concludes but what the law should end, The life of Tybalt." Montague was referring to the law Verona's prince has put in place that punishes any Capulet or Montague for fighting with the other family.
Mercutio and Tybalt will be missed deeply by their friends and family. Romeo has been exiled for the murder of Tybalt. Citizens of Verona hope that this tragedy will end the dispute between the Montagues and the
Capulets.
