Scudder, one of the nation's first investment counseling firms, founded in 1919 by Theodore Scudder, Haven Clark, and Sydney Stevens, had performed a successful development until 1993. Especially in 1980s and the beginning of 1990s its mutual fund business was one of the fastest growing mutual fund families in terms of growing account numbers, asset size, and revenues. Meanwhile, thanks to corporate pension plan sponsors directing their funds to large sophisticated and diversified money management firms, its institutional business was also growing. Scudder's mutual fund business was the first to introduce international mutual fund and no-load mutual funds in the U.S. in 1970s. The firm's investment counseling business was executed by geographically separate offices (Boston, New York Philadelphia, Dallas etc.). In the course of time, some of these district offices became specialized teams on the investment side of the business (for example, equity research analysts and portfolio managers in New York office, fixed income specialists in Boston office). Parallel to its domestic growth, the firm's international branches had been opened and international instruments offered had been increased in numbers. In 1980s, with the expansion in the organization structure and the increase in the instruments offered, the firm had improved both its database and service technology; furthermore the firm's organizational structure was changed from partnership form to corporate form. Its service policy was based on direct marketing. Its basic concern in providing its services was to deliver quality investment services and to add value for its clients and therefore, their investment portfolios were composed investment instruments with relatively low risk and moderate return.…

The role of the wealth manager is not to simply sell a financial product to a prospect. Instead, a wealth manager’s first concern is developing a comprehensive understanding of the client, a client-centric approach to providing financial solutions. Next the wealth manager must match the right solutions to the client’s needs and desires and ensure he or she receives an exceptional service experience. After that, product and service sales opportunities will naturally follow. Making the transition is clearly a trade-off between short-term results and long-term success. Financial security through goals-based wealth management. As a wealth manager with Merrill Lynch, the emphasis would be on marketing and looking for ways to help clients with a broad array of financial capabilities. The objective is to help clients achieve their goals and dreams, whether it’s living in luxury, providing charitable contributions and/or leaving a legacy for family and friends; consult and advise clients how to best save and structure their investments to reach their goals.…

Finding something to invest in can be confusing because of the terminology of different ways and things to invest in. A person may not have the knowledge or confidence on how to invest wisely. There is so much information to research and understand on what a person should do if they want to invest. Morningstar Inc. was established to make investing easier for individuals because their main focus is on the individual and not institutions (Ferrell, Hirt & Ferrell, 2009). I know I would like to invest in stocks, however I would not know where to begin. An investment company like Morningstar has the knowledge to watch the companies that they know would be a good investment. Pull money from a declining company and putting into another company…

Beta Management Group is a small investment management company based in Boston, which was founded by Ms. Sarah Wolfe (The founder and CEO of the Beta Management Group) in 1988. Ms. Wolfe follows a market timing investment strategy based on two portfolios; the Vanguard index and money market instruments. The goals of Beta Management were to enhance returns but reduce risks for clients via market timing. Ms. Wolfe would keep the vast majority of Beta’s funds in no-load, low-expense index funds; and, the rest of the money would go into money market instruments. Keeping the market exposure between 50% and 99%, she eventually established the limited use of Vanguard’s Index 500 Trust because it had a very low expense ratio and its success resembled the S&P 500 Index’s return. By January 4, 1991, Beta had 79.2% of its $25 million in assets ($19.8 million) invested in the Vanguard index fund. Wolfe had been quite successful in 1990. She had reduced Beta’s equity position to 50% in June, partially missing a large two-month market decline. The company’s success had brought in enough new money to double the size of Beta in under six months. But she had lost some potential new clients who had thought it unusual that Beta Management used only an index mutual fund and picked none of its own stocks. In order to solve the problem of losing potential client, it decided to add individual stocks to its equity portfolio for diversification and also for marketing purpose. She preferred to pick smaller companies because larger stocks are thoroughly analyzed which leads to the fact that the probability of making excess profits is lower.…
