The funniest thing
The Funniest Thing That Ever Happened to Me I was a seven-year-old boy, and was fairly close to my grandparents. My family has a strong Chinese background as my grandparents were refugees who fled from China in the 1940s. My grandmother, just like most old Chinese people, did not understand even the tiniest bit of modern technology. Moreover, since grandfather died, she started to transform her house into a mini zoo. Her sheer lack of understanding in technology and her wonderful family of animals got this story started. It was a routine for me to pay a visit to my grandmother’s house during the school holidays. Honestly, I did not foresee anything surprising for that visit. So far, visiting my grandma’s house had not given me any notable excitement. Being an always-hungry seven-year-old boy, I was only expecting to smell her delicious ‘rendang’ and ‘satay’ as I walked to her lovely house. However, I learned that it was not likely to happen on that day. Several men were working and trying their best to keep the noise level low. My grandma greeted me and delivered the shocking news. Out of the blue, my grandma decided to build a mini zoo. It was, considering that my grandma was 67 years old, quite a surprising decision to be made. My parents, however, told me to just support her and understand what she was going through. A truck arrived in front of the house and animals were brought out from it. Most of them are cats, dogs, and birds. Some water creatures were being transferred onto the new big pond that was built last week. To say that I was not happy would be wrong. Although I did not understand the rationale behind this, at least seeing the smile in my grandmother’s face brought butterflies in my tummy. I was anxious, excited, to see how the zoo would turn out. My grandmother then approached and showed me another surprise, her new cell phone. I knew how much she hated to learn new things, and this could be a revolution in her life. She politely asked

In the late 80’s the company I worked for moved toward creating cell phones and gave each employee an opportunity to get one. The funny thing is that to this day I still have the same cell phone number and I probably purchased 10 or more different phones over the past 25 years. Today the phones are smarter and a computer in your hand because now you can also complete shopping, banking, and a ton of useful things.…

As I walk in through the swinging glass door of my grandparents house, the instant smell of fresh white baked bread hits me. The sweet dough crisped to golden-brown is now in sight. I see it sitting there, on the smooth kitchen table to the left of where I just entered. I know that as soon as I say hello a piece of it will be offered to me. As I continue straight into the open living room I notice my gray-haired grandpa sitting comfortably in his cushioned lazy boy rocker. With every slow rock he makes there is a slight creak that overpowers the sound of the Twins game on their T.V. On the crest of the same rocker lies his favorite dog, Lucy. Her white and black, furry belly expands and compresses at the same rate of the slow rock. My grandma,…

My cell phone plays a huge role in my life. I think many others would say the same as well. Before I received my first phone, my oldest sister, Andrea, had a phone. When we realized what was sitting there on the kitchen counter, our jaws dropped. There, sitting on the counter, were two beautiful brand new phones in white shiny boxes. One box had Sarah’s name on…

Pushing past my anxiety and entering the family’s home, I look around me and took in the large, multi-purpose room. Scattered amongst the large wooden dining table, couches, and television, the sentimental trinkets and children’s toys added warmth to the small home. Although the walls were unfinished and half-painted, the home felt lived-in and cherished. The air was stale and warm, yet the room exuded an air of sweet, beloved family memories. Immediately,…
