The Giver Summary

“Jonas, Jonas”, the crowd started in a faint whisper. “JONAS, JONAS, JONAS”. The name grew louder and louder as it echoed across the auditorium. Thousands of voices chanted gravely as they remembered the young boy who was lost. The Giver, too, has joined them, slowly repeating his name. Jonas was gone, but the memories did not come back. No one will ever see color, or hear music, will never experience pure joy. The Giver remembered the nights he spent with Jonas, fabricating a plan to save the lost Community. But maybe people could not handle the misery and pain that became a part of The Giver’s life. It might be easier to live cluelessly, to lead a life without purpose. But inside, he knew that life without memories is empty. As much as it hurts, remembering is what makes life worthwhile.
The Giver went back to the Annex building and tried to understand what he has done. How could he have let Jonas go? He remembered looking at the little intercom screen, watching powerlessly as Rosemary ended her own life in the cold, colorless room. He was agonized then. But losing Jonas was worse than war. Jonas has lifted a part of the Giver’s burden, helped him realize how much easier it is when memories are shared. He hoped, at least, that Jonas has found his final destination, that he found
