and they watch the citizens every move. In the minds of the people, their society was perfect.
Jonas is an eleven-year old boy, who is eagerly awaiting his Ceremony of Twelve. It is here when he will receive his life’s purpose and occupation. Everyone in the Society looks forward to the ceremonies. It is exciting for all of the citizens. They all get a two-day holiday from work or school to attend the ceremonies. The most anticipated ceremony is the Ceremony of Twelve, where each Eleven turning Twelve is praised in front of the Society and given their life’s duty to the Society.
As Jonas and his two best friends, Fiona and Asher are patiently waiting to receive their jobs. Fiona and Asher are both given jobs that are perfectly fitting for their personalities. When Jonas’ turn comes, he is skipped! It frightens him, but after all the other Elevens become Twelves, the Head Elder puts the unease to rest. Jonas has been selected for a very special task; he is to be the new Receiver of Memory. This is the most important job of all in the Society. The last Receiver was selected ten years ago, but it caused turmoil in the Society. The Head Elder tells Jonas that his training will be harder than his friends. And he will experience pain, something he has never felt before.
In Society, no one feels pain, or experiences things in depth.
They see things in black and white, with no colors. No on is afraid of anything, and war and hatred have been erased. Children are taught to use precise language, and many words have been eliminated from the English language. There also is no such thing as a choice, and everything is Society is pleasant and enjoyable. Release is their form of death, although people don’t know anything different. To them, release is a beautiful thing honoring the Old when their time has come. Newchildren are also released when they don’t meet certain standards they need to be given to a family unit. However, when an individual has to be released it is looked at as a shame and embarrassment.
Jonas’ training has begun, and it completely changes the way he thinks about everything. The Giver, the man who is in charge of Jonas’ training, contains all the memories of the past in Society. He holds memories of things that Jonas has never even heard of, such as snow, rain, hunger, grandparents, and sailing. The Giver transfers memories to Jonas everyday, and the experiences and sensations Jonas has from them changes him. He now has an attraction to Fiona, and he sees her actual hair color. The Giver has given him memories of snow, grandparents, hunger, and more, but now he has the memory of
color.
Jonas’ father plays a huge part in his life. He is a Nurturer, and he takes care of Newchildren that have been born in the year. One baby in particular needs special nurturing, and his name is Gabriel. Their family has special permission to have Gabriel at their dwelling unit overnight for an extended period of time so that he can progress like he is supposed to so that he can be transferred to a family unit. However, after nearly a year and a half of extra nurturing, Gabriel is scheduled for release. Jonas, armed with his new knowledge from the Giver, decides to steal Gabriel and take both of them away from Society. He steals a supply of food and his father’s bike and Gabriel and Jonas go on their way to Elsewhere. They encounter things that Jonas has experienced in the memories, like snow, a sled, danger, and exhaustion. It takes all of Jonas’ strength.
