The Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith is a fantastic horror/science fiction book. The Grasshopper Jungle had me on the edge of my seat at all the right times. This is the story of Austin Szerba a punk rock and history junky and Robby Brees a very confused teenage boy, best friends who are out to discover who they are. Austin and Robby both live in the small town of Ealing, Iowa. There was not much to do in Ealing besides eating at the local pizza place and smoke a cigarette behind the local pizza place. If you wanted to find Austin and Robby you could find them smoking behind Stan’s Pizza Place, that is were the Herbert Hoover High bullies found them one afternoon.
Later that night Robby, Austin, and Shan Austin’s girlfriend had returned to retrieve the missing skateboards but ended up finding more than what they came for. While Robby and Austin were on the roof, Robby committed a gesture that will change his and Austin’s relationship forever. Eventually, after the skateboards were found Robby and Austin decided to break into Shan’s step-father’s store. Robby and Austin find crazier objects than what they found on the roof. Shan’s step-father’s office was decorated with jars filled with disturbing items, one of the items being a glass globe containing a black glowing substance.
