Nick Carraway just moved to Long Island, from the Midwest, to learn the bond business. The city is split into 2 halves. West and East Egg. Nick Carraway lives in West Egg. It is the lower class part of town, and Nick hates it there, but his neighbor Gatsby lives in a mansion. He is a very mysterious guy that everyone claims to have never seen before. His cousin, Daisy Buchanan, lives in East Egg. This part of town believes that you are born into your social class. Daisy and Gatsby have a past relationship that was cut short due to Gatsby leaving for the army. These two love for each other sets the foundation for one of the main themes in Great Gatsby.
Throughout the story Fitzgerald introduces a theme of love. Love is seen all throughout the passage, but not one person loves their lover back passionately. Fitzgerald creates this concept of love through the relationship of Tom and Daisy Buchanan.The two are referred to as old money. They believed that you were born into your social class. The couple are introduced early in the book when Nick comes over. Their relationship seems ordinary until he sees a bruise on Daisy’s hand. All of the relationships in this novel showed love from a brutal and pessimistic way. In Tom and Daisy’s relationship we learn that as long as you keep things a secret you will never prosper. In Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship we learn not to be committed to people who aren’t committed back. From Myrtle and Mr.Wilson’s relationship we learn that no relationship can be one sided. What we can take away from all the relationships is that the foundation of a good relationship is communication and equal love. Each couple had poor communications skills and they didn’t love each other with all their hearts. This why there relationship
