The Happiness Hypothesis By Jonathan Haidt: Textual Analysis
When we were assigned to read this book, I had a couple people tell me that it is not a very good book, or that it was not worth reading, I totally disagree! Typically, reading is not what I find enjoyment in. It has always been a difficult task to find a book that interests me enough to sit down and actually read it and to fully understand it. There have not been very many books that I have actually found interesting enough to actually sit down and read, but this one is one of the books that I did not quite expect to enjoy, but the outcome of my thoughts were different than I had originally expected. Within The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt, he mentions that there are two ancient truths concerning how the mind works. “The first truth is the foundational idea of the book: the mind is divided into parts that sometimes conflict with each other. The second truth is Shakespeare’s idea about how “thinking makes it …show more content…
Companionate love grows slowly over the years as lovers apply their attachment and caregiving systems to each other, and as they begin to rely upon, care for, and trust each other. If the metaphor for passionate love was fire, the metaphor for companionate love would be vines growing, intertwining, and gradually binding two people together.” (Page 125) “If passionate love is a drug, it has to wear off eventually, because no one can stay high forever. Passionate love does not ever turn into companionate love. Passionate love and companionate love are two totally separate processes, and they have different time courses.” (Page

For centuries, society has shaped these abstract ideas of what happiness means and how one could achieve happiness in their lives. However, in order to even understand what actions could lead to one’s happiness, one must be able to understand the definition of happiness itself. Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

“If you’re not happy today, then you won’t be happy tomorrow unless you take thinks into your own hands and take action” states Lyubomirsky in her excerpt from her book The How of Happiness (Lyubomirsky 185). Dr. Lyubomirsky makes an effort to explain what are the different parts that determine human happiness and how can that happiness be improved. She makes the argument that although 50% of happiness is determined by a genetic “Set Point,” an individual can still become happier through intentional activity or action, which accounts for 40% of total happiness according Sonja Lyubomirsky. In the context of self-help happiness books and philosophical arguments, Dr. Lyubomirsky goes against the grain by making the argument that genetics does…

The Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner and Quincy Troupe entails the life story of Christopher Gardner. Like other books that movies are made from, The Pursuit of Happyness movie was very different than the book. In the movie, Gardner starts out in his late twenties; he lives with his wife, Linda, and his son Chris Gardner Jr., who was five-years-old at the beginning of the movie. The book starts out very differently; Gardner is just three-years-old and living in a foster home (Gardner and Troupe 15-16). By the end of the book, Gardner Jr. is barely four-years-old. The major difference between the book and the movie is that Gardner experiences physical, mental, and sexual abuse.…

Kanye West’s 2007 hit song, “Stronger” uses Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger”. In his novel, The Happiness Hypothesis, Jonathan Haidt states his hypothesis that people must endure all the hardships of life in order to grow in all aspects. I agree with both Nietzsche and Haidt that through perseverance of all difficulties that occur in life, we can develop a stronger physical, social, mental, and emotional state. I find Haidt’s suggestion interesting because many hardships I have endured and am continuing to endure, prove his suggestion valid.…

Would you rather be happy in your life and live in ignorance or would you rather live your life with more of a purpose? Even if that purpose means doing things that most people would frown upon. This is one of the conflicts the characters face in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 is a book about a fireman named Guy Montag. In his society fireman start fires rather than put them out. Most fires started by the firemen are fires in which they burn books. Most books are not allowed and the firemen have to be called to burn them. In this book Montag appears to be a by the book firemen early on but as the book continues you learn he has his doubts about his work and if he is really happy at all with the current life he is living. In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury believes that it is better to know the truth about your life and live with purpose than to live your life happy in ignorance. In the book Bradbury proves this in a few ways. One way it did this is when Guy Montag first met Clarrisse and started questioning what was wrong with the society that they lived in at the time. When Montag started to do the same it eventually gave him a new purpose in life and started giving him the ability to have real relationships and actually become happy with his life instead of just being happy in ignorance like most of the other people in the city he lived in. It also opened his eyes to a different world of knowledge and showed him that his old life was a lie. Those are a few examples from the book showing that Ray Bradbury believed it is more important to live your life with purpose than to be happy in ignorance.…

Romantic relationships are seen as “a joyful fusion of closeness [and] communication…” (McCornack, 2010, p. 322) These relationships provide more of a bond than a regular relationship connected with friends and people we know but aren’t close to. A romantic relationship is a chosen interpersonal involvement built through communication in which both people in the relationship see it as romantic. In the development of a relationship, there are five stages. In the phase McCornack calls “coming together” there are five stages: initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, and bonding. The main stage I will be analyzing is the intensifying stage.…

In the essay," What Happiness Is," Eduardo Porter shares quotations from sources to define happiness (459-61). I will focus on Gandhi's quotation " Happiness is when, what you think, what you say and what you do are in Harmony,'' Gandhi. When they are out of alignment you have internal conflict and happiness will be hard to achieve. My life was good and I was happy. I had a great husband and had recently brought a house in Sacramento, had a good job and a great circle of family and friends.…

How does Huxley associate ideas of happiness with consumption and a society's well-being? In the twisted era of Brave New World, Huxley has created what seems to be a false symbol of universal happiness. In Brave New World it is suggested that the price of universal happiness will be achieved with the sacrifice of major treasured aspects within our culture, such as: family, freedom, love, childhood, and home. Happiness in this dystopian novel is achieved through the mass consumption of producer goods. While some people would argue that true happiness comes from internal pleasure, rather than material possessions; Huxley presents us a society that solely bases its well-being on the feeling of pleasure associated with the consumption of materials.…
