The Haywain Artist: John Constable
This paper is going to be talking about this painting: Title: The Haywain; Artist: John Constable; Date: 1821. Most people see as an excellent example of how multiple elements and principles work together to create an outstanding masterpiece. First of all, this painting uses multiple types of lines, such as horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines on the house to the left of the painting, and curved, diagonal and vertical lines on the trees because the branches are somewhat diagonal and the stem of the tree to the trunk of it are curved then vertical. Next, is space, this painting uses this very well, as well as mainly positive space, a little bit of negative space if you count the pieces the blue sky from the patches in the clouds. Also, the shapes in this painting are good, most of it seems to be organic shape, but the house seems to be somewhat …show more content…
Furthermore, the value in this painting seems to all over the place, but since there are clouds, most everything is shades of colors, except in the background where the sun is shining on the trees and bit of field, so that part of the painted is made of tinted colors. Now, onto the colors in the painting, they use two of the primary colors, red and blue, as well as one secondary color, green, this also uses multiple hues of the same color, blue and green; the value of the colors is there as well. Now, emphasis in the painting, the emphasis is on multiple things in the painting, such as the brick house to the left, or the wagon in the middle of the water, and the field and multiple trees to the right of the painting. The contrast in this painting is also very well done, because the kind of dull dark-ish colors are on the left leaning toward the middle of the painting, but the on the right side of the painting are the light

Marks use of monochrome blue is what really drew me to this piece. By using only blue I believe Mark has perfectly reflected the mood and atmosphere of the situation through the use of color. The blues seen in the painting are mostly deep or dark blues with the only lighter softer blues seen in the calm waters of the lily pond. Even in the water we see the reflection of the dark clouds above…

Action lies in the relationship between the artist’s choice of colours, space, and lines. He uses vibrant and rich colours to grab the observer’s attention and to create visual interest. Carmichael made excellent use of space by organizing the composition of the landscape. A foreground, middle ground, and background created depth in his work. Line is a vital aspect of movement and dynamic activity in the painting and was demonstrated through the varying lengths of bold, horizontal brush strokes. Collectively, all these formal elements, the use of contrasting temperatures of colour, thick lines, and solid forms all encapsulate the work’s energetic…

all the colours in this painting are cool. The painting also has a blue green colour scheme with red as an accent colour. These dullness and coolness of these colours make the setting seem like early morning. This use of colour makes the violent act happening in the painting seem normal because the colours make it seem like a normal day. The red acts as an disturbance to the peacefulness of the blue and green hues.…

The style of this painting is abstract with simplified and exaggerated aspects. The water and sailboats have all been simplified. The boats that are closer to the front of the painting have been exaggerated more than the others in the distance. There are many horizontal lines within the painting created with the hard, exaggerated brush strokes in the water.…

The first thing to note is the overall composition of the painting. First and foremost it is a landscape painting. The colors are very monochrome; the space is stretched to reveal a depth to the painting that the eye cannot capture; and there is stillness to the art that embraces nature and serenity of life. In the right-hand corner of the painting there is calligraphy. The calligraphy lacks the precision, but is very clear in its form, much like the depiction within the painting itself.…

There are very few sharp lines in the work but the artist has still been able to give a realistic look to the painting. By keeping the sizes of the objects in the painting proportionate to what they would be if you were to look at them in real life he has added a sense of realism to the painting. Much of the painting has a very geometric shape such as the windows, fireplace, baseboards and such. The coats however have a more organic shape, hanging freely and loosely on their hangers hooked to the fireplace mantle. Aside from the view outside the window and of the coats hanging upon the mantle the space in the painting is fairly empty.…

In the bottom left area of the painting you see a group of trees that are light green on its top leaves but a darker green for the leaves not seen. There is one subjected tree with a form behind that looks like it is a rose bush with its brightly red flowers. Past that rose bush like figure the trees go beyond it blurring out. Now you are focusing on the bottom middle. There is a small splotch of dark brown that looks as though it is a bare area in the greeny field.…

The uttermost unifying piece of this artwork is the color. The use of atmospheric perspective relies on the color palette. It heightens the ephemeral quality of light and nature because it is constantly changing. The blues and purples are subtle and encompass the majority of the canvas. The blues are minutely changed and layered against one another. Dow’s color palette is made up of only complimentary colors that strengthen the contrast and reinforce the inspiring nature of light and form. Greens and reds are prominent in the foreground and appear grid like giving each level of rock…

Some of these archetypes that the painting includes are a powerful vibrant sky, big mountains in the background, large unique trees in foreground, and water with a welcoming feel. I created a darker feel for this painting by leaving the trees without leaves, saturating the sky with dark blues, and making a darker foreground grass with some highlights. Along with the…

The coloring has a kind of solemnity that is difficult to describe. While a considerable amount of the color has been preserved through the years, the tones, primarily turquoise blues and reds, seem to bring a new view on the piece due to the passage of time. This coloring brings about a dulled richness due to fading throughout the years. The tones, especially the blues and reds, actually bring about an enhanced view to the sculpture due to the passage of…

The artist also uses shape to show all the pieces of the house and how they rely on each other. It includes many pointy and gothic type shapes. There are not too many round shapes included either. I believe all this helps to communicate a sort of darkness the model has as well. Ultimately each element, not just one, helps to communicate the overall message the artist is trying…
