China House Nightmare
China’s Bronze Age - a time period beginning in 1650 BCE, where men learned how to mine and smelt copper and tin not only to make bronze weapons and tools, but art as well. It is necessary for one to know of this certain period in order to fully understand the piece of artwork I chose to analyze. The specific piece is one from Materialized: Juried 3D Printed Art, an exhibition that is currently on view here on campus. The piece is called House Nightmare, which was created by Patrick Wilson, an artist from Kalamazoo. It features a stilted house that has pieces scattered, a dismantled structure, and a staircase in the back of the house. The piece is recognizable as a structure, a house to be specific, and in my eyes it has a subtle evil …show more content…
However, if you analyze all angles of the piece, it’s obvious that there is certainly formal elements. To begin, the first element that I noticed was line. The deep lines on the roof accentuate the shingles and on the siding of the house as well. The lines are uniform on the walls and repeat the whole way down. On the roof there is an alternate pattern in each row. As for the broken out pieces, the lines allow one to understand how the direction of the break. The piece includes hidden lines as well that serve as sort of a directional purpose. The second element I noticed was the use of texture. Texture sort of directly relates to the use of lines. Texture is used on the roof of the cylinder as well as the roof of the actual house. It is easy to tell without touching that it is a rough shingle material. Also, on the outside of the cylinder, texture is used to show how it was structured. Texture is also used on the stilts to show it is some sort of metal material. It is also used on the stairway to accentuate the grain in the wood. Another element used in this piece is shape. As previously mentioned, the piece is 3D. Most shapes are geometric which includes cylinders, pyramids, prisms, and cones as well. There is also irregular shapes which is represented in the broken pieces. As previously mentioned, there is certainly a dominant pattern in the siding of the house as well as the …show more content…
The ripped apart house means more than just a disaster that may have caused destruction of a structure. I believe the artist is showing how all things, no matter what it applies to, will eventually experience something negative. Shape was used effectively to show the evil in this piece. The house is standing stall, stilted off the ground using cylinders, which are worn. The main cube used for the house has a large irregular shape taken out of the side of it which is found laying on the ground. The artist also uses shape to show all the pieces of the house and how they rely on each other. It includes many pointy and gothic type shapes. There are not too many round shapes included either. I believe all this helps to communicate a sort of darkness the model has as well. Ultimately each element, not just one, helps to communicate the overall message the artist is trying to

For example, the iron that the ferry is made of. This is seen on the walls of the ferry, the pillars, the floor, and the chairs. Because there are light bulbs in the ceiling of this ferry’s deck, the light of these are then reflected on these surfaces by using lighter colors, mostly white, which through this noticeable and shiny reflection along with the long brush strokes add smoothness to these, it makes the texture of these appear like iron. Another example is in the floor of the boat’s floor, where we can tell that there are water puddles because of the texture depicted in them, which is done through the reflection of the lights again made with lighter colors and mostly white, the irregular randomized brush strokes as well as the different colors used to portray how certain parts of the floor are wet (with the use of darker colors) and others are dry. Then there are also the buildings in the back which we can see are made of glass because of again the use of reflection made with different colors, especially…

The significance of Wright's design of the Robie House is that he neglected the conventional ideation of a house as a box containing a smaller "boxes" for rooms. By contrast, the interior space is fluid and transparent, allowing the entry of light without obstructing the view. This "explosion of the box" produces the effect of walls unfolding to reveal large, vast…

The ultimate reason why slavery was such a vital factor was due to the fact that it was essentially free labor. The only thing that plantation owners had to pay was the initial transaction between auctioneer and buyer. After that, there was no need to pay the slaves for their labor. Obviously, this seemed to be the most efficient way to produce goods that would supply England’s needs. Efficiency was well sustained environmentally and economically. Politically, most of the people with authority did not disagree with slavery so it was not questioned nor was it scolded as it is today.…

The house was big. It’s the typical, “seventies style” home on one of the most, “selected streets.” The house use to be, “white (1)” after the death of Emily’s father the house slowly began to fall apart. Emily’s house was the only original house left from the seventies and it had started to decay. It is a tad ironic that the outside of the house is decaying as in the room upstairs a man’s body is also decaying, this is an example as well for the Gothic setting. The fact that the author states the house used to be “white” is important due to the time period the house was built. When Emily’s father was a live the house was well kept and maintained once he passed away the house began to fall apart. As time goes on the house just begins to decay more. The “white” house is no longer “white”, the balcony is falling part. This also helps paint the picture of a Gothic setting because the house is now scary looking. The house is beginning to look “abandoned”, there is a smell of dust and “disuse- a close, dank smell (1)”. The fact that the house has a distinct smell also gives off the Gothic feel. These are examples of the Gothic setting because of the darkness created by the eeriness of the decaying structure of the building. It makes the house look like something out of a horror or supernatural…

    Still Life With Peaches

Line is one of the elements used in this still life. To show that the items are placed on a ledge the artist uses lines. Lines go vertical to show that part of the wall is indented. Curved lines are also used to show the overall shape of the peach and wine glass and pitcher. Lines cross when it comes to the straw tray which holds the peaches. Another element is form the peaches are angled and colored in a way to make them look as if though they were three dimensional. Also, when you look down at the wine glass it looks like it has depth. The final element I saw was value. The background has many different shades of the same colors. On the top left corner of the painting the colors are extremely dark, but as you go down diagonally to the bottom left the colors get lighter. The peaches also have value. In the middle the value is very light but as it goes outward the value gets darker. Same goes for the bread, the top is very dark while the shades go down on the bottom of the…

Line is used by creating sharp lines to divide colors in this painting. There is also sharp, bold lines to show the exaggeration and a shadow of creating the 3D effect. There are also lines that have a vantage point to show the 3D effect as well. In the background of the painting it shows the buildings are in the distance and multiple figures are up front posing by doing an action. Shape is shown in this painting as well.…

The line in The Haunted Palace “evil things, in robes of sorrow, assailed the monarch’s high estate” (Poe 201) foreshadows Usher and his house dying. Usher is the monarch in the poem and his house is the high estate. The evil things are attacking the estate, which foreshadows Roderick Usher’s insanity killing him. Another example of foreshadowing is “...a barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front made its way down the wall...” (Poe 197). This fissure foreshadows how the house will fall and symbolises Usher’s insanity. The tiny crack in the beginning foreshadows that the house is going fall apart because of Usher’s insanity. The crack is small and insignificant in the beginning because Roderick and Madeline are still alive. When they die the crack that wasn’t important now widens to a fissure and swallows the…

At the beginning of the story, the narrator comes upon “the melancholy House of Usher”(Edgar Allen Poe 264). Immediately Poe’s description of the house sets the atmosphere for the story and begins building on Poe’s single effect of terror. “With the first glimpse of the building a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit”at the mere presence of the house the narrator is over come with sadness(264). As the narrator goes into a deeper description of the house, the reader can begin to visualize the dark and scary house with rotting trees surrounding it and old molding bricks creating its structure. “Dark draperies hung upon the wall,” shows the house’s visual appearance and atmosphere do not get any clearer within. The interior of the house compliments the house’s dark and decaying outwardly appearance. The narrator describes the house as having “many darken intricate passages”with very large sad tapestries and ebon…

    House Of Usher Symbolism

Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery in “The Fall of the House of Usher” in order to set up the symbolism between Roderick,Madeline, and the house. At the beginning of the story, when the narrator first comes to the house, he describes it as large and impressive, while also being in poor condition. One of the many ideas that he notes about the condition of the house is, “The crumbling condition of the individual stones” (Poe). Poe conveys the look of a house that is still standing and functional, but in worsening condition. This stands for the collapsing of the Usher family. This imagery is revealed as symbolism later in the story. Similarly, this type of symbolism can also be seen when the narrator speaks of the fact that the mansion is fungus-ridden.…
