The Highwayman
The HIghwayman
The highwayman also known as Peter, met Bess at a very elegant ball. He invited her to dance, and she said yes. They loved each other at first sight. They would go to more balls together, and Peter would visit her as much as he could at her inn.
The highwayman rode in the darkness of the night with trees surrounding the road. He continued to ride until he reached the inn. The highwayman had brown hair, a pale face with a great smile and was very strong. His polished shoes that went over the knee did not have a single stain and shined just like the stars. He was wearing a white shirt with lace on it and had a velvet coat. His clothes did not have a single crumple. He rode into the in yard where he tapped to the window

Bess did not see the highwayman in the night, morning or day. At evening, the sound of marching redcoats came to the inn door and walked right in and drank all of his ale instead of speaking or greeting him. The redcoats left a mess ale on the floor, tables and chairs laid on their sides. After this, they went to Bess room and gagged her and put bound her to the bed. Then two redcoats laughed as they tied on a musket to her with the barrel pointing at her chest. They blew out the candle and told her to keep watch. Bess looked out of the casement window and saw the road that Peter was supposed to be on. She thought to herself, When will Peter come back? He has to come back to save me and get untied from the bed and the gun. It would be hard for him to come here because of the redcoats. I have to get my hands free to warn him. Bess then worked with all her might for hours trying to get one finger free. Her hands were soaked in sweat and blood she still kept on trying. Cold, on the stroke of midnight, the tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers! She then heard the Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! of Peter’s horse he was coming to save her! The redcoats heard the sounds of the horse coming so they got their guns ready to shoot him. Bess then realized that if Peter came to the inn he would get killed. She thought to herself I must warn Peter about the redcoats he does not know that they are here. There is only one way I can warn him. She then set her finger on the trigger and pressed. She fell on the floor dead. She had killed herself to warn her love. The gunshot was heard by Peter and then he galloped away from the inn. When he was on the road he heard that Bess died. Peter was saddened by the news. He rode right back to the inn on the road he was shot by the redcoats He layed there with his clothes more red than the coats of the people who shot him. Now on they are ghosts
