The History Of Softball

Softball started on Thanksgiving Day In the year 1887 while a group of men and women were awaiting the outcome of the Yale-Harvard football game. Softball started only with men, now an estimated forty million Americans engage in at least one game every year. It is now one of the most popular games in the world. George Hancock is the person that made the Softball, the rules, and the glove. The game was originally called “Indoor Baseball” for people to practice for the upcoming Baseball season. Then in 1889 the game turned into a league. In 1895 Lewis Rober Sr. moved Softball outside for Firefighters to do something while waiting for an alarm, and In 1934 the Joint Rules Committee of Softball collaborated to create the Amatuer Softball Accociation or the ASA, and the rules for Softball. Then in 1943, women started taking the bat. In 1951 the First National Softball week was formed (July 22 - 28.) The first NCAA Division Softball Championship was in Omaha, Nebraska in 1982. The World Cup is important because it allows all the top teams in the world to compete against each other, but in 2006 the International Olympic Committee voted to remove Softball from the 2012 Olympics, and It worked. today the World Cup has become a huge event for Softball.
