The Hobbit: Comparing The Book And Movie
Bilbo Baggins is given the responsibility of saving the dwarves from being eaten by Smaug, the dragon, just like when he saved the dwarves from multiple terrible situations such as saving them from the trolls. The title of this book is The Hobbit written by J.R.R. Tolkien and the director of the movie “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” is Peter Jackson. The book and movie are about a hobbit named Bilbo who is called to go on an adventure. In this adventure Bilbo, 13 dwarves, and a wizard will go kill the dragon who tore apart the dwarves’ city and took all of their treasure long ago. Bilbo is growing as a hero in the movie and the book but there are many differences too, the differences in the movie are all changed by the director Peter Jackson …show more content…
For example, “...‘-but anyway I think I will go and have a peep at once and get it over. Now who is coming with me? He did not expect a chorus of volunteers so he was not disappointed’” (Tolkien 213)… “In the meanwhile his friends did their best to cheer him up; and they were eager for his story, especially wanting to know why the dragon had made such an awful noise, and how Bilbo had escaped” (Tolkien 227-228). This shows Bilbo went down by himself and came back by himself. Bilbo had not been dependent on anybody in this scene. Bilbo made some mistakes, but he did do it without causing any deaths or dying himself. Bilbo is becoming a great hero because he does not need Gandalf or the dwarves to save him, and he doesn’t get into more trouble than he believes he can handle. In the movie Bilbo goes down by himself, but when the dwarves hear Smaug they come down to rescue Bilbo (Jackson). This is effective because it changes the whole scene. Jackson’s purpose for changing the scene is to make it full of action and to grab the viewer’s attention. Bilbo is not by himself so he didn’t grow as a character. If he expects to be rescued every time then he will be killed when he isn’t. The director shows different shots of Smaug to show how large and frightening he is. The lighting in the room makes everything about Smaug very creepy and scary. The lighting also makes the viewer on edge for Bilbo because it is so dark and dungeon-like. This shows Bilbo is dependent on the dwarves in this scene. Bilbo is the hero so he is supposed to be independent and not rely on someone to rescue him. Thorin and company rescue Bilbo and make him dependent on

These movie starts by describing the setting where the hobbits lived and spend their lives in holes. In the movie Jackson makes Bilbo a hero and a thief when he is trying to get a knife from the trolls to save his ponies. In the in the book Bilbo is trying to steal money from the trolls enormous pocket. Then Bilbo gets exposed and captured by the trolls when he tries to steal money in the troll’s pocket. As evidence, “Then Biblo Plucked up the courage and put his hand in William’s enormous pocket. There was a purse in it, as big as a bag to Biblo ‘Ha’ thought he, warming to his new work as he lifted it carefully out, ‘this is a beginning!’” (Tolkien 36). The trolls have a speaking wallet in the book that makes the trolls look back at Bilbo and this in turn makes the trolls capture Bilbo and the Dwarves. In the movie Jackson makes Biblo a tissue. The trolls wipe their boogers all over Bilbo. They also think Bilbo is a live “squirrel” (Jackson). So the trolls freak out and that makes some audiences laugh. Instead of having a magic wallet talk Jackson has Bilbo stealing a knife which shows his courage given the circumstances. Afterwards, one of the trolls picks Bilbo up and sneezes all over him. Then the troll throws him because the troll thinks Bilbo came out of his nose. This illustrates how the movie is more effective because the humor and the different scenes such as the one shown above or below makes the audience more inclined to see the movie. Also the director gets the exactly right angle of Bilbo and the trolls section that he makes it look ominous and intriguing. The director also uses different lighting, which changes the way that different audiences look at the movie. Therefore, this is also another reason why the movie is more effective than the…

In support of this, in the novel, it states how Bilbo kept a secret from Thorin of the Arkenstone he had stolen. He sneakily traded with Bard, knowing that Thorin was not a fan of sharing gold, which Bilbo felt that him and the dwarves deserved. He did not know the Battle of Five Armies would become a result of his sly moves (Tolkien). This highlights how Bilbo made a sacrifice and put his friendship on the line with this betrayal and lie. Bilbo develops as a hero because he believes of the greater good and depends on his own morals, trying his best to avoid conflict. This time, instead of relying on his usual group, like he would have, he ignores the view of others and stands up for himself and his morals. Middle Earth was impacted by his actions since Bilbo now uses his traits of being a burglar in hand and changes himself with strategies. Overall, Baggins was in a difficult position, but the way he was able to escape shows how he has improved from old, scared, Hobbit-Hole Bilbo to a one of a kind…

Lucas, not a pedigreed filmmaker by no means, is given the greenlight by 20th century Fox and the budget of 11 million dollars to film his creation. “Soon the goblins had a ring of smoke and flame all round the dwarves, a ring which they kept from spreading outwards; but it closed slowly until the running fire was licking the fuel piled under the trees. Smoke was in Bilbo’s eyes, he could feel the heat of the flames( even though he was so high up in the trees); and through the reek he could see the goblins dancing round and round in a circle like people round a midsummer bonfire. Outside the ring of dancing warriors stood the wolves at a respectful distance watching and waiting to devour the first person that dropped dead out of the treetops. Bilbo could hear the goblins beginning a horrible song, and with that the flames were under Gandalf the wizards tree. In a moment it caught the others and went up like a rocket, when it was just beneath Bilbo’s, he closed his eyes, ready to die when...” As it can be seen Biblo and company were in many tight spots throughout this adventure, and he could not have done it all on his own. That is where Bilbo had to use the three themes of luck, courage and good sense to overcome evil and stay alive.…

For example, Bilbo kills a giant spider with his sword by himself: “Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins” (Tolkien.155). This event reveals a great turn in the novel of how Bilbo faces the danger unaided, which is contrasting with his old time living his life in joy of comfort in the hobbit-hole. Furthermore, Bilbo then finds out a way to save the dwarves: “ He had precious little time, he knew, before the spiders were disgusted and came back to their trees where the dwarves were hung. In the meanwhile he had to rescue them” (Tolkien.160). This quote illuminates the heroic character of Bilbo after the great turning point in the novel which is shown in his decision of redeeming the dwarves. After facing many dangers Bilbo gains courage, he then finalizes his redemption and becomes a hero.…

Although initially Bilbo sets out to heal his wounded pride, by facing the dragon he proves to himself that he did not need to be a burglar in order to be confident.…
