In The Illusionist directed by Neil Burger, there are four concepts, perception, reality, illusion, and deception. People have different perceptions about Eisenheim’s magician shows. Eisenheim does compelling illusions that lead people to wonder if he has supernatural powers or it’s just tricks. The film tells an extended story about Eisenheim and Sophie and there is a plot twist at the end, this is when the theme is revealed. Sophie and Eisenheim plan out a scheme, and pretend that the Emperor killed Sophie. They planted everything out and in the end, it all ended up being an illusion. As a result of Eisenheim and Sophie’s plan, everyone thinks Sophie was murdered but she is actually still alive. Eisenheim pulled off this illusion. This plan shows that Eisenheim truly does deserve the title “The Illusionist” the plan has every little detail figured out and the whole story comes together in the end when Herr Uhl finds out. Eisenheim made sure that one person would know the truth so this whole illusion would have a purpose. Someone had to know that it was a trick. After Herr Uhl finds out the truth, the theme reveals itself as deception. People think Eisenheim is innocent and no one realizes that he’s tricking them all, he deceives them. People and stories may be different than they seem. People shouldn’t believe everything they see and hear.
Eisenheim’s performances are like a break from reality and the whole town is fascinated. Many people think Eisenheim has supernatural powers, they grasp on to the hope of communicating with the dead. While other people believe that they’re just illusions and tricks although, they are still curious and they want to know how the trick is done. This reveals the theme of perception.
