The United States of America originally a nation of immigrants is rapidly becoming a nation of native born citizens. We have by now had an opportunity to produce the native-born individual someone we might label as an “American”. Today, the number of foreign-born persons in the United States is about 3,000,000 of the population, and about 5,000,000 of Americans are the children of immigrants. American identity has been created by many events throughout the course of history. This country was founded on the clashing and mixing of many different cultures and lifestyles. One of the most important periods of time for this country was during the period of conflict between Americans and Native Americans over land rights. Americans had an idea of manifest destiny and that this land was theirs for the taking. The Americans were going to walk through anyone who opposed them in this quest for land. The treatment of the Indians during this time period was harsh, cruel, and violent to say the least. It is in this treatment that Americans came to view the Indians as a "racialized other" and where race began to matter. This early thinking is what created our American identity which is based on race.…

Identity is how people identify you and can tell who you are as a person. Immigrants are people who migrate to a different country. Samuel P. Huntington once said, “ Immigrants pose a challenge to our policies and our identity in a way nothing else has in the past.” Huntington is suggesting that immigrants are making it difficult for the American people who are trying to find out who they are as a person.…

When asked the question “what is an american?”, almost every single person would provide a different answer. This question is very open ended, and there are infinite possibilities for a response. Being an american is not something that can be decided by a few physical criterion, it is something more. To be an american is, according to Patricia Fernandez, “a state of mind,” based on a person’s beliefs rather than their tangible features. Therefore, I believe that an American is someone who considers America to be their home, believes in freedom and equality for all people regardless of race, social status, gender, or ethnicity, and is loyal and supportive to the United States.…

America became a country on July 4th, 1776; over 240 years ago. That’s greater than 240 years of generations of people trying to define what it means to be an American, but few still stand true today from that long ago. Being accepting of others, not only other ethnic groups but fellow Americans as well, is one way in which things have not changed from the first American generation to the latest. One of the longest standing traits of the “poster child” American is being courageous, whether it be to earn our freedom or to fight for our rights as a civilization. Taking pride in our country is one of the oldest, and strongest, qualities of an American that was so important in the forming of our country and of equal importance, if not more so, today. Our generation defines what it means to be an American with the simple, and somewhat original, manner of being accepting of others, being courageous, and taking pride in our country.…

Immigration by definition means arrival of settlers in new country. Leaving ones country in hopes of finding a new country in which one can settle and make a new home is what makes immigration an integral part of human nature. Immigration in biology leads to genetic variation and higher survival levels. When one talks of immigration, now concerns of economy and living arrangements are the first thoughts that pop in the minds of many. Social and economical positions are extremely intertwined with the concept of immigration. Immigration leads to higher rates of competition in the economy which leads for businesses to have higher output levels, in turn giving room for more workers to be hired. Immigration also leads to more social diversity. More cultures are placed into areas with hundreds if not thousands of other cultures and soon the society becomes greatly diverse. Looking into the past, immigrant workers were responsible for the construction of this nation. This is indeed a nation built off the sweat of immigrant workers from the world over. Immigrants have given enough to this nation to be recognized as key aspects of this nation’s past. Through the process of immigration this nation has grown and expanded.
