As a shy teenage girl with two left feet and a fear of dancing in public, I felt that dancing at a friend’s quinceanera as a member of her court of honor was going to be the worst experience of my life. After my mother gave me the news that she had volunteered me to be a dama de honor, I immediately complained about having to dance with a group of strangers for 5 months in preparation for the dance performance in front of about 200 people. For the first month I reluctantly attended every practice, and the most communication I had with the rest of the court members were a few mumbles once in a while. But as the day of the quinceanera approached, I became more comfortable with the other members of the court and even befriended some of them. I…
Racism has been around the world since the beginning of time. Racism in its most basic form is the idea that if you are of a certain skin color you are better than another person of a different skin color. It is a topic that most people do not like to talk about but whether they like it or not it is a major issue that needs to be addressed. People of darker skin are the ones who have been oppressed by people of lighter skin since colonial times. However, most of it had stopped for a while but now we see that it is coming back. The same issues that people struggled with to get over and create harmony are entering back and haunting society today. The current event, the mass deportation of Haitians from Dominican Republic echoes its racist history.…
“Say, what right and what justice do you hold in such cruel and horrible servitude to these Indians?” Friar Antonio de Montesino claimed these powerful words in 1511 AD to the Spanish. The Spanish were racist to the Dominica’s and treated them like slaves. Although many people think that the Dominican Republic is only a wonderful island with amazing beaches. Although true, the Dominican Republic has always some racism issue and still deals with some even now. In the Dominican Republic racism has occupied a place in history, modern day society, and everyday life.…
As a kid, we usually don’t focus on small things like what ethnic title society labels us, we just want to be kids and have fun. Growing up we start to realize that these things aren't small at all. It’s actually a huge deal for people to question what ethnic label they are referred to as. Not only that, but it’s a bigger question what people label themselves as. I was introduced as to being Mexican. Made sense since both parents were born in Mexico. But I was born in the U.S. so it made me wonder, What exactly does it mean to be Mexican, American, Hispanic or Latino? What do all these ethnic terms society labels us mean?…
About ten years ago, my family moved to this country. As a Mexican legal resident people believe I didn’t struggle; however, I often remind them that I also come to the United States with little to no knowledge. I was expected and demanded to learn a foreign language, which was going to aim me in the future. A future that was unknown, surrounded by a different culture.…
Honor is defined as having respect for someone, mostly for being moral and knowledgeable. What if through a variety of trials one comes to realize honor is not always the right thing for all of mankind? This happens for Creighton through his many struggles he learns honor is not always the best guide for his choices in life. Creighton helped out the Americans because they were in need and that was courageous because he is from Britain turning alliance with another Country. He saved the print shop by going back into the fire and grabbing prints so the shop could reopen and resemble what it was before it burned. He helped his dad even though everyone told him to leave him resulting in the injury of a bullet to his leg. Creighton Brown is a true…
As a Hispanic woman who comes from a Hispanic cultural heritage I have aspired to become a Physician. My Latino heritage has influenced me to perpetuate my education and reach my dream vocation as a Physician within my community. I have huge fascination with science especially in the science behind skin and beauty. Although my motivation emanates from my love of helping people. I want to help people in need and provide extra help to those who come from the same heritage as me. An immensely colossal part of my cultural heritage is the language. Spanish is the primary spoken language used among Hispanics.…
As someone who is biracial, I feel being Hispanic has been a unique experience for me because I am always discovering my Hispanic identity. For a long time, I felt disconnected from that part of me because I grew up in a predominately white town away from my family. In fact, I only discovered this part of my identity this February when I attended a camp called Building Bridges that is centered on race. There I was paired with other biracial people who felt the same and the discussions regarding identity made me realize what being Hispanic means to me. Now I realize being Hispanic is more than being bilingual and the color of my skin. It is about being part of a hard working community that has incredibly rich history and culture.…
“Hispanics are defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as people of any race who are Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or belong to any other Hispanic origin group” (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2000). “55 million is the Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2014, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic or racial minority. Hispanics constituted 17 percent of the nation’s total population” (Bureau, 2015). In 2008, there are an estimated 3,838 Hispanics living in Greene and Craighead Counties combined (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2009). The Hispanic population continues to grow due to a steady flow of migrants entering the United States. “The diversity that exists among Latino groups in…
Teenagers these days no longer show their pride in being an American anymore. I truly believe that without that pride in your country, there is no America. To encourage those people, maybe even friends of your own, to actually show the pride that they may or may not have in their country, you must make them realize how wonderful this country is and how well off they have it here compared to other countries all over the world. Though America is in a bad time at the moment, we have the strength and persistence to get through it as we have in the past.…

There is a lot of historical background to the Mexican American identity. This identity started with the Mexicas. The Mexicas were indigenous people from Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco. The Mexicas were a group of indigenous people that had their own set of beliefs, norms and values. The Mexicas had long hair (including men and women) because long hair meant wisdom. The Mexicas harvested their own food. With related to the political aspect the Mexicas had their own political structure. They had a male ruler and it was Cihuacoatl. After the ruler it was the council of 12 women. These women were selected by the city states and were advisors of the main ruler. Next in the political structure were the Calpullis and they were like districts or city states. The last part of…
