The Importance Of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a day dedicated to those of who died fighting in the American armed

forces. It's original name was Decoration Day because when it originated families and friends honoring the deceased soldiers would go to their graves and decorate them with flowers, treasures, and goodies in honor of their service. The idea for Memorial Day was born during the Civil War to honor the dead Union and Confederate soldiers. Three years later, General John Logan proclaimed "Memorial Day" an official holiday on May 5th, 1868, in Waterloo, NY. On the first Decoration Day/Memorial Day, around 5,000 people decorated the graves of about 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.

It's important to honor Memorial Day at Local, State, and National levels because many towns claim Memorial Day as its birthplace, so it gives everyone a reason to connect the holiday to themselves, due to the unusual spread of Memorial Day birthplace beliefs. However, when General John Logan first crafted the holiday the south wasn't in total agreement with celebrating it because of the hard feelings after the recent end of the war. Therefore, the south honored their dead soldiers on a different day than the North until after World War One. Sadly more than 250 soldiers died while imprisoned during the Civil War in Charleston South Carolina and were later buried in unmarked graves. However, the town's black citizens organized a day in May of which they made a burial ground to appropriately honor the unrecognized soldiers. It wasn't until 1967 that the holiday known as "decoration day" was changed to "Memorial Day" in honor of all Americans fighting in any war. For example, in World War One France, Russia, Italy, Britain, And the U.S.A. fought together, leading to over 17 million American deaths, all of our soldiers risking their lives for

It is important to keep honoring our veterans because they have sacrificed so much for this country. Also we honor them because we need to tell them how appreciative we are of their dutiful service to our country. Even the president honors our veterans. Each year the president or one of his representatives lays a wreath on The Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers in the Arlington Cemetery every Veterans Day to honor those veterans. Even though the first unknown soldier was laid to rest there on Armistice day on the year of 1921 this ceremony still continues. This is one way that shows just how important honoring our veterans…

In my family, we also spend time with family and friends eating, playing games and talking about our ancestors. This is what Day of the Dead celebrates as well. Although many people in the United States don’t go to such lengths as the Mexican people, people in both nations use family traditions and customs to celebrate and honor the lives of their dead relatives. I think American veterans should be honored for several key reasons. The first and foremost reason is that these brave men and women risked ther lives for the freedom of the United States, or even for the freedom of a country half way around the world, which they knew nothing about. Either way these soilders fought for freedom, and each one should be honored one way or another. Another reason veterans should be commended is because we never want to repeat the time when Vietnam war veterans came back to the states. They were treated terribly. They were spit on, objects were thrown at them, they were denied of jobs by people who resented the war, etc. Yet another reason is that these people fight so the rest of us don't have to. These people also keep the wars over seas, so us citizens can sleep safely at night. Also, some soilders see some really traumatizing things. Either seeing their buddies die right in front of them. Anyone who has seen Saving Private Ryan has a pretty good idea of what some soilders witness.…

For most Americans, we honor our veterans because they served us to be free and without them we wouldn't be free in our country. But why? Why do we honor our veterans years after they're done serving. We need to honor them because they fought and worked hard for friends, family, and country. To me, if we don't honor our veterans it would be heartbreaking to the veterans that made our country free. Also, since we are free we can have our own beliefs and not believe in something that someone else does, and have our own rights so we can do what we want to do. Thank you to all veterans that served for our country so we can be free.…
