First it was Shiloh then the battle at Richmond. Then the battle of the Missionary Ridge Siege of Petersburg,The battle of Wilderness and many many more, who knows what's to come next!
Grant moved his troops south to Richmond the next morning. In 30 days Grant had lost 50,000 troops. One day in the middle of the night a fire started in the woods where Grant and his troops were sleeping 200 soldiers burned to death. Grant lost a lot of soldiers throughout the battles.So many that people started calling him a butcher, but Abe Lincoln stayed by Grants side through everything.
Even though a lot of people hated Grant he got a lot of victories starting with Shiloh, Vicksburg and the battle in Chattanooga, Tennessee and some others.The battle of Shiloh took place in the hills of Tennessee along the river. The battle took place on April 6th-7th,1862. Grant went against General Albert Sidney Johnston. Johnston’s plan was to cave in on Grant and his soldiers and his plan didn’t work because Grant had won. 8 out of the 10 Union soldiers had never been in a battle. One of the biggest battles Grant was in was the Union battle with Robert E Lee.
April 9th was a very big day.That was the day that Lee surrendered to Grant in the Appomattox court house. We all know the war started when the Confederates bombarded Fort Sumter and the war took off from there.Lee finally surrendered when Grant took away his supplies and had surrounded him and his troops. What Grants soldiers would do was get a piece of paper and write there name and addresses so when they died they could tell who they were and contact their family. After Lee surrounded the south, The north had to go back to their homes and rebuild
everything.
Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. When Ulysses was one, his family moved to Georgetown, Ohio where his dad owned a tannery. Ulysses had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. His brothers names were Samuel and Orvil. His sisters names were Clara, Virginia and Mary. Ulysses worked as a real estate agent and a farmer and failed both, but sometimes he worked in his dad's tannery. Grant's father pushed him into attending the U.S. military academy. Grant didn’t want to attend, but it was his only chance at future education.
Grant was born as Hiram Ulysses S. Grant but when he signed up from the military academy they got his name wrong and they put Ulysses Simpson Grant, so he changed his name. Grant graduated from the U.S. military in 1843. In 1848 Ulysses got married to Julia Dent, who was a sister of one of his former classmates and she was the daughter of a planter. The year Ulysses graduated he moved to St.Louis, Missouri. From 1854 to 1859 the Grants, Dents and enslaved African Americans workforce lived in White Haven. In 1860 the Grants moved to Galena, Illinois and he worked with his dad in his leather business. Sadly after 4 years of marriage, Ulysses had to leave for the war. Ulysses rejoined the army in 1862 when the war started. Right after he just went home from leaving the war in 1861. Ulysses S. Grant was a man of many things. He was willing to help in the war and help his father in his business. He was considered mean and bad to some people but Lincoln was always there by his side throughout the whole thing. Ulysses S. Grant is a trooper and a fighter. Ulysses S. Grant got Lee to surrender at the Appomattox court house.
