The Importance of Positive Perception and Optimism
The Importance of Positive Perception and Optimism Every human being perceives events and situations differently. However, many researchers have found that perception is a choice. Negative perception can stem from multiple areas of a person’s life. The most positive and fulfilling method to bettering the quality of one’s life is to possess a positive attitude and optimistic perception in all situations. Many people do not realize why having a negative attitude is so influential. However, a negative attitude affects every situation a person meets on a daily basis. Whether it is at school, work, church or the grocery store, a negative attitude is easily noticed. Martin Seligman, a noted psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania points out that optimists are more successful than similarly talented people with pessimistic attitudes (Harrell 10). Success can be influenced simply by the outlook a person has! Not only does a negative attitude affect all aspects of life, it reflects the mind and value of each person. It is easy to point out people who have a positive attitude; they can be determined, hopeful, or able to shed light on any situation. However, it is also easy to recognize a person with a negative attitude; possibly a troublemaker, unmotivated, or unreasonably bad tempered (Harrell 11-12). A negative perception can cause people to interact with others in a distasteful way while also affecting the physical appearance of the individual. Negative people tend to be more self-conscious and apathetic when to it comes to appearance. Slumped shoulders, grungy clothing, and a closed-off demeanor can be signs of a dark mind. All of these effects of a negative attitude come together to influence a person’s life in a dramatic way. As well as not understanding the severity of a negative attitude, many people do not know where their bad attitude comes from. An overall negative attitude grows from simple negative emotions. Feelings such as anxiety, stress,

I've always found that misconceptions can affect attitude. Sometimes we get too wrapped up in life's details. The separate ingredients of culture and lifestyle captivate us so throughly that we lose our perspective on life itself. We scurry like mice through a hedge maze--the real beauty of life lies just beyond the bushes, and what is that beauty? Simplicity is what it is. As T. Allen Culpepper, the author of The Myth of Inferiority explains in his article, hope quickly grows dim when the obstecales of life throw their knock-out punches ( Culpepper, 300)…

When your attitude is positive you can fly higher than the sky, but if your attitude is negative then you can fall deep into the ocean. It has been said that a positive attitude is the key to success in life, and I just so happen to agree. Positivity can make you more motivated. But hey, just look on the bright side. I mean it’s always darkest before the dawn. If you dream it, you can do it. Watch. No? Oh well. America today is decidedly and unwaveringly optimistic, we are positive thinkers. Positive thinking is defined by one of its leading advocates, Dr. Charlene Proctor as “the process of choosing positive emotions to create an outlook that translates into a new or better-chosen reality.” In short, our thoughts and attitude can affect the course of the outside world, so we should strive to be positive to reap positive outcomes, while stifling negativity for the opposite reason. We praise the optimist while shunning the pessimist. But the question is does every cloud have a silver lining? In order to show positive thinking as the dangerous paradigm that it is we will first examine the causes of positive thinking, move onto its effects, and then finally round out with solutions.…

Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…

When your negative and upset about things you tend to be unhappy. My first example In the story The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the main character lives in a area where the dust bowl is. The family lives on a small farm and survives on the money that they get from the crops they grow and sell. The quote below will show how your attitude can be another big part of your happiness. The author says, The squatting tenant men nodded and wondered and drew figures in the dust, and yes, they knew, God knows. If the dust only wouldn't fly. If the top would only stay on the soil, it might not be so bad” (Steinbeck 3). The author is saying that the wind and the soil is so dry because of the dust bowl that it would just lay flat. This goes along with attitude because during this time they are having problems growing crops but they need to have a positive attitude to remain…

The words of legend Bob Marley speaks wisdom into our souls with music that good things never come to negative people. So leave everything in the hands of God. Negativity poisons the soul like a venomous snake. Positivity is the key to living a successful life. What does it mean to remain positive? If you ever get a bad grade on a test instead of getting mad, go home and study so you can be prepared for the next test. When you fall do not lay there and pout, you get back up and try again. A positive attitude is continuing to push and think positive when you have fallen and think your are done. Good karma and success comes having…

Throughout life we are confronted by many difficult situations however, how we deal with these situations will either enhance or deteriorate our physical and psychological health. An attitude can be defined as a “predisposition to act in a certain way towards some aspect of one’s environment, including other people” Mednick et al, (1975). Many theories have been put forward to predict attitude change, Argyle (1994). However, attitudes are extremely difficult to define and can’t be directly seen or measured, so behaviour is inferred from what people say or do. An attitude is the subjective evaluation of objects, people, events, ideas, activities and feelings. This evaluation is normally of a positive or negative nature and is based normally on experiences which you have conflicting feelings towards. Attitudes have a past, present and future, to which behaviour develops in a sequence. Many believe there are three components…

Optimism can be both a positive characteristic and a negative depending on how a person applies it to their life. One might think that optimism is solely a positive characteristic, but this is not always the case. Optimism may be described by researchers as a personal trait, this is termed dispositional optimism. In this perspective of optimism a person has an expectation in which a person will have more positive events and a small amount of negative events that will have to be dealt with at times. Another view of optimism is called explanatory style, in which the focus is more on how a person might explain a negative event in a way the keeps them positive. Optimism also can be a negative thing in such aspects of unrealistic optimism. In this aspect of optimism expectations are often so high for a positive outcome that they defy reality. This can easily be described with an example of a person who thinks that they will win the lottery, when in reality the odds are stacked against them. A person with this type of thinking might commonly say that “It won’t happen to me”, when in reality it is more than possible. Optimistic people tend to be healthier and less stressed, and deal with life’s stressors more productively as compared to a pessimistic outlook on life. Hope is another aspect of optimism that can have a positive bearing on one’s life. Hopefulness can create more flexible thinking adding to one’s ability to solve problems. It also builds self-motivation, and reinforces the benefits of optimism. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary online defines hope as cherishing a desire with anticipation. One can see how optimism and hope are different yet interrelated. Were optimism is more expectation that more positive events will occur as compared to negative, or one’s perspective for how they explain negative events. Defensive pessimism also might sound like a negative perspective, but can be beneficial in one’s life when applied positively. Positive Psychology defines…

"The trait of optimism may provide cognitive, coping, and contextual resources that promote better mental health" (Carver, et al., 2010. p. 880 pp. 2). Optimism is a behavioral trait that describes people who look for the positive in a situation. Optimism can help people cope in negative situations and lead to greater well-being. Optimists ability to cope with negative situations gives them increased opportunity to succeed and live healthier lives, compared to pessimists, because they believe a positive result is more likely.…
