Reading and writing are essential skills in modern life. These are used often in everyday life, e.g. when shopping it is important to be able to read signs and labels and be able to work out values and amounts. Being able to read develops child’s vocabulary, this is a skill children will learn over a period of time. Children…

CIEP 206 Final Reflection: The Role of Literacy in Learning Amparo Vélez Echavarría Loyola University Chicago Looking back onto my life, I always think about the time that I spent in elementary school. I remember feeling my heart clench as I watched everyone reading with ease while I would hide in the play area. I did not think that I was not good at school after I was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. Every recess my classmates excluded me when I asked to play with them. I heard them laugh at me while they walked away screaming “what a dumb weirdo!”…
Children need to be exposed to these strategies because “Knowledge, indeed...is also power; not only is it excellent in itself, but whatever such excellent may be, it has a result beyond itself (From The Idea of a University).” If children aren’t exposed to reading and writing strategies it will be hard for them to obtain useful and meaningful knowledge, which is needed to accomplish success. “ ...knowledge is not a mere extrinsic or accidental advantage… it is an acquired illumination, it is a habit, a personal possession…(From The Idea of a University). One important reading strategy is knowing how to mark a book as you read. “Marking a book won’t make understanding drop from the book’s tree, but it becomes a fruitful enterprise if the marks help one discover patterns. Patterns is the key to reading… (All books are coloring books).” Patterns are important in any writing because they help a reader identify style and main ideas. If a person is able to identify key points it makes it harder in adulthood, when they are faced with contracts and documents, to be tricked or deceived into signing or agreeing to unfair terms. Additionally it is important to know how to read and write between the lines, “Unless you do, you are not likely to do the most effective kind of reading ( How to Mark a Book).” Anyone striving to achieve literary success…
Literacy is one of the most important things in the world today. If you want to be successful, you must be literate. As someone who writes and reads every day, I can understand how meaningful both “Freewriting” by Peter Elbow and “Four Ways of Reading” by Donald Hall can be beneficial to anyone who is literate. In order to help further advance the students in my class with their writing ability, our professor has been making us free write for ten minuets at the beginning of the class period.…
This is a story about how I became the reader, I am today. Starting with the two people I love the most is my parents, then is when every make believe thing is real like the gingerbread man, and now finally is the person who made me want to read all day every day, the person who doesn't want to put a book down, I wanted to be just like Miss.King , but sports, homework, school, and much more so right now I and a 5 because reading takes time and I don't have all the time in the world to read, other thing come first. Now let me tell you about me reading history.…
Over the years, my interest and awareness regarding reading and writing have varied from time to time. I remember my mother reading bedtime stories to me as a child and actually painting my personal pictures to what she was saying. Once I was old enough to read the stories myself, I would go back and compare my mental pictures with those that were in the book. During my elementary days, I found the novice level of reading and writing to still be interesting. Everything from transferring imaginary stories I had thought of onto a sheet of paper to tell the entire class about my church league team winning the basketball championship the previous Saturday, I thoroughly enjoyed writing and felt I had a personal connection to it.…

Genesis is a ten year old African American female and is in the fifth grade. She lives in a low income neighborhood with her Grandmother whom has sole custody. While Genesis’ Grandmother would like to play a more active role in her granddaughter’s education, she works a full time job and has health problems that prevent her being able to drive. Genesis was in my fourth grade Read 180 class and is with me again as a fifth grader. I selected this student because she is strong in phonemic awareness, yet her writing scores are weak and she needs the most individualized support in writing.…
The internet is a very big thing and some people may think that if you type a random questions it will have answers for everything but it doesn’t it might only know a quarter of what happens in the world. When you have a school project you will more than likely look up the stuff on the internet than read a book about it or reading an article. Sometimes when classes do book reports or reports on people you can type it and send it to your teacher and you don’t have to read it in front of your class. When you’re in college you have to write a lot and the iGeneration is used to typing and sometimes you have to write in cursive but we never actually learned how to when we were in elementary and we should…

Do you remember learning to read as a young child? How about wanting to be able to read like your parents and siblings could? Learning to read, for me, was something that I had always wanted to do. My siblings and my parents could read, and not being able to made me feel kind of left out, and like I was missing out on something. When I started Kindergarten, the most exciting thing to me was being able to learn to read. I don’t remember any specific instances when I was practicing reading, but I do remember the process that we did every day.…
For me writing is the process of express our ideas and thoughts on a paper or in any other material where you want to transmit it; using signs. And reading is the process of understand and analyze any type of information that is written. Reading and writing are skills which we do not possess at birth; we develop them as we grow and however they are extremely important to integrate into society. They are two skills that are in development throughout life.…
