Why Literacy Is Important
Why Literacy is Important for Your Future The internet is a very big thing and some people may think that if you type a random questions it will have answers for everything but it doesn’t it might only know a quarter of what happens in the world. When you have a school project you will more than likely look up the stuff on the internet than read a book about it or reading an article. Sometimes when classes do book reports or reports on people you can type it and send it to your teacher and you don’t have to read it in front of your class. When you’re in college you have to write a lot and the iGeneration is used to typing and sometimes you have to write in cursive but we never actually learned how to when we were in elementary and we should …show more content…
When you have a scientific job and when you work with animals you have to know how to pronounce their scientific name and when you’re on the internet you can’t really learn how to pronounce the scientific name of the animal and the ability to listen is a part of literacy so you can have help from other people to pronounce it because they speak and a computer can’t. My grandpa is a GenX and he has a flip phone and all he knows what do with it is to call so he when he needs to look something up he either asks one of us to look it up or he looks it up in a book. If I need to do a report I look it up but seventy percent of the time when I look something up there is like ten different answers so most of the time I got something on the report wrong. I think by mastering your literacy skills you would understand a lot more in life and when you got to college you will also understand more and it’ll be easier to do assignments and you would more than likely get an A or B. My goal is to master my literacy skills so I can get my PhD and become a marine

Nowadays, if a young adult hears a new terminology, instead of going to a library and looking it up in an encyclopedia as what his or her parents would have done, he or she will pull out his or her smartphone and “google” it. Thanks to Google and all other commercial Internet companies, we are closer to all kinds of information, both useful and useless, than any other time in human history. In Nicholas Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, he admits how the immediate access to the rich store of online information is benefiting him largely as a writer (Carr, 589). While enjoying this positive influence of the Net, however, he brings up a side effect of the Internet which is hardly ever mentioned:…

Anyone could list why it is important for someone to be literate. However, besides from the obvious “it is important to know to speak and to read,” there are many instances where knowledge has proven to be everything one needs. Frederick Douglas is an example of this kind of success. Throughout Frederick Douglas’s life, the most important factor to his success was that he learned to read and he learned rhetoric. Its significance is that because of these skills he learned, it led to the doors of his freedom allowing him to be a major success model for the people of…

“What’s the Matter with Kids Today,” composed by Amy Goldwasser, is a strong argument against the assumption that Internet and other new found technology is worthless. Goldwasser begins her argument by giving you examples of the opposing view. For instance, within her first three paragraphs she gives many negative views against Internet use, one being a survey conducted by a research organization called Common Core. “A phone (land line!) survey of 1,200 17-year-olds… researched Feb. 26, found our young people are living in “stunning ignorance of history and literature.” (Goldwasser 666) This survey led to the acceptance speech of Doris Lessing, a British novelist and playwright, for winning a Nobel Prize in literature, where she referred too many as “a fragmenting culture,” and states that, “young men and women… have read nothing, knowing only some specialty or other, for instance, computers.” (Goldwasser 666)…

Some might have said that Google invent new innovative ways to learn. In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr’s that the internet is a threat to our brains, but there is no evidence of such cause. I found that the internet is a tool when it comes to reading, studying, and anything that I am able to find on the internet. We are in a world that enable us to learn much than in a book could which might lead to believe that technology can improve teaching and learning, but there still some continue to insist in traditional reading or writing. For example, the baby Boomer generation might be more resistant to rapid technology changes and prefer to pick a book instead figuring out how or what technology could improve one reading or writing which a lot generation X prefer to do. We have to integrate both generations to find median ground to understand digital application can improve teaching and learning due to why literacy matter. We need to able to guide the…

They could be listening to music on Youtube, scrolling through Facebook, posting photos on Snapchat, or even using Google to look up something new. Every minute, thousands of bits of information are being processed around the globe; after all, there are 2 million Google searches every sixty seconds. People in today’s society, also nicknamed Generation Z, turn to the Internet to get the answers to their questions. These kids are the sons and daughters of those who went to the library or an encyclopedia to get their information, but with the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989, people are able to get answers instantaneously instead of spending hours poring over encyclopedias or getting lost in the labyrinth of a library to find their data. When doing homework, students mindlessly copy their answer off the World Wide Web instead of searching for it, reading it and processing it as needs to be done to learn. At the same time there is too much useless information to see, like each of the forty-one thousand posts that are posted every second on Facebook. Kids today are absorbed in the Internet, not wanting to be torn from their precious connection, and therefore, don’t have enough time to process what they see or read. Bradbury predicts exactly this in Fahrenheit 451, when Faber explains the three things needed in life, “Number one, as I said, quality of information. Number two:…

In fact, studies have shown that students who have access to the Internet, use it in order to improve their grades (411) and tend to be more critical while reading something on the net (410). Reading: somewhere, somehow it is all around us. Everyone learned to read through different methods and sources. As I grew up, education was not a question. I was taught to focus on school and everything else would fall into place. I knew that I would attend college and be given the opportunity to have a great education. However, other people are less fortunate than I have been. Minorities and people living in poverty cannot afford to read books and expand their knowledge. This hurts them as they age and causes them to fall behind in school. Literacy is very important to our culture, as it affects how our country is ran and decisions that are made in state and national offices.…

It is well known that reading to children, especially throughout the toddler and pre-school years, is positively correlated with increased reading and literacy levels throughout the school-age years. One particular study (Lee, 2010) investigated the impact of reading to children specifically during morning transitional periods at a childcare facility. The implications of this study show that there could be numerous benefits linked to parents reading to their children during these periods in particular.…

I have first-hand experience with how the internet has been beneficial to school work. For example, in my high school Social Studies class, I had to do a lot of historical projects, and one project I selected to work on was about Rosa Parks. I had to make a poster board all about her. When using websites like Wikipedia, the internet helped a lot with that project because it allowed me to learn more about Rosa Park’s background and find out all the reasons she was so important in life today. According to Amy Goldwasser she states that in a survey finding, that one in four teens could not identify Adolf Hitler’s role in world history (668). Even though one in four teens couldn’t identify Adolf Hitler, it wasn’t because they spend too much time on other electronics, it’s because schools and parents don’t…
