Since these socio-economic based admissions have shown success in regards to economic and racial diversity, then I think that our government should consider reforming affirmative action by adopting socioeconomics-based policies. When someone mentions affirmative action the first thought that comes to mind in most cases is that it is a black or white issue. In 2016, the LGBT community should be considered for the change in affirmative action. As America starts to accept what was once known as a taboo or a forbidden lifestyle, it comes with a different set of challenges. Most corporations are letting transgender individuals use the bathroom in which they identify with. This bold step forward has caused unrest with some employees and customers in the work place. Human resource departments across the nation are working around the clock to ensure proper training and understanding of its work force and guest. Time will tell if this is enough to protect them from people that may try to cause them harm verbally or physically. Affirmative action has come a long way but it still needs some work. It is no longer just a black of white issue but also an issue of sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or gender. Affirmative action needs to evolve with each decade to include the issues of the time. When affirmative action was created transgender people were not as prevalent, and lower socioeconomic children were not trying to get into colleges. As a county we do not want to revert back to the times of segregation where only one type of person could use the cold drinking fountain. We need to remember Elizabeth Stanton’s amendment to the Declaration of Independence, that all men and women are created equal
