the importance of surfacant
In order for a new born baby to breathe, they need for their lungs to be able to expand. Surfactant help the expansions of the lungs by reducing the surface tension. It is essential to perform this experiment to understand the function of surfactant in the respiratory system. Base on this information, it can be hypothesis that when dish washer is added to the food coloring and the milk, the food coloring will reduce the friction between milk and dish washer.

When the drop of detergent is added to the powdered surface, the initial effect is to draw the powder back to the edges very rapidly as the detergent molecules form their own surface layer with a lower surface tension than the water. As the detergent gradually mixes with the water, the powder begins to sink, and a needle will now pass through the surface with ease under its own weight. However, the calcium and magnesium salts of many detergent molecules are soluble, so detergents still lower the surface tension of hard water…

The main function of the respiratory system is gaseous exchange. This refers to the process of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide moving between the lungs and blood. This occurs during gaseous exchange as the blood in the capillaries surrounding the alveoli has a lower oxygen concentration of Oxygen than the air in the alveoli which…

The purpose of this experiment is to design and conduct a basic scientific experiment, identify and control variables. Some other objectives that we learned is to write a formal hypothesis, identify the basic and integrated process skills of science that were used in this experiment. Also, we will learned the effects of temperature on goldfish respiration. This experiment will be conducted with four students , one goldfish, thermometer, a stop watch, and a beaker. Our results showed that the fish temperature increased and the fish breathing slowed down.…

One of the most important functions of the respiratory system is to supply oxygen to all the cells in the body. Every cell in the body requires a constant supply of oxygen to stay alive. Because most of the cells are not in contact with air, the respiratory system must supply them with oxygen. Another function is to remove carbon dioxide and water from the body.…

Rembac states that paper towels are porous and permeable, which means they have small spaces that liquid and air can pass through, and liquid is able to rise through a property of water called cohesion. In this paper towel experiment, Rembac will be testing which brand of paper towel has the highest rate of capillarity, or ability to absorb water into its many spaces. Rembac`s procedure cut out 3x8 inches of each different brands of paper towel and observe any differences in the paper towels and take note. Then she fills each beaker half was and dips the strips of paper towels about an inch in the water and uses a marker to see how far up the water was absorbed on the strip, and repeats 4 to 6 times with each brand. (Rembac,…

After test the three, laundry detergent seemed to stop the oil the most. The oil took over 5 minutes to get through the detergent. The oil took 8.8 seconds to get through the soap. The oil took 16.8 seconds to get through the salt.…

Surfactant is an essential component for the respiratory system to function properly. This experiment was administrated to help us understand better the role of surfactant in the alveolar system. Surfactant is a detergent-like substance produced by the Type II alveolar cells in the alveoli. Surfactant is produced to make it easier for people to breath by reducing the surface tension of the water molecules that primarily compose the walls of the alveoli; it helps them to not stick together. For this experiment, we will be using milk and food coloring to represent the water (milk) and gas (food coloring) in the respiratory system. Because I know milk is non-polar and food coloring is polar, my hypothesis predicts the two will not mix voluntarily at first, but the soap acting as a surfactant, when added, will help the two liquids mix together.…

2.Yes, there were differences in how the food colouring behaved in water, oil and milk, before the soap was added. After adding the food colouring into the water, the food colouring slowly began moving towards the center of the Petri dish. After adding the food colouring into the milk, the food colouring instantly sinks towards the bottom of the Petri dish, and slowly disperses. After about one minute of the food colouring sitting on the bottom of the Petri dish, it then begins to move upwards once again and separates. After adding the food colouring into the oil, it stays in the same spot, not moving at all. Due to the substances containing different materials, each acts different…

BACKGROUND: 1In hard water there is a high amount of mineral content present in the water. Most of the mineral content that is present in water are Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Even though hard water does affect a person’s health, hard water can still have harmful effects in an industrial environment, appliances in a household setting, and certain cleaning task. 2For example, when hard water repeatedly goes through pipes, the water causes deposits that eventually build up and clog the pipes. When cleaning dishes the presence of hard water can be detected when a layer of film is present on the dishes. Soap becomes less effective when hard water is present because the soap will bond with the minerals in the water.…
