For example, one incident on United Airlines last week has caused them to lose 100’s of millions of dollars in stocks and airfare. In addition to this, they now have a lot of work to do to regain the confidence of their potential customers and stock holders. Sometimes it only takes one incident to lose confidence and trust.

I believe one of the things that we recently started doing, that has improved our image and helped to build trust, is the recent implementation of Narcan. Unfortunately, Dayton, Ohio has one of the highest overdose rates in the country. Due to this, we have partnered with several addiction recovery services programs. This includes a needle exchange program as well as several other opiate addition initiatives.
Prior to our officers carrying Narcan, they would respond to the calls and stand there over the overdose victim while friends and family pleaded for them to do something. The officers would stand there and attempt to reassure them that the medics were coming and that it would be ok. As promised, the medics would show up and spray the Narcan in the victim’s nostrils. Within a few seconds to a minute, the victim is awake and talking. The friends and family are very grateful for the medics help. I believe we have all seen how one officers’ actions has effected policing across the country. These types of things also happen around areas covered by local news station, and other police departments in those areas are effected. Some of the high-profile incidents that have caused this is, the O.J. Simpson case, where Detective Mark Fuhrman was found to have lied on the stand. Of course, this was translated as being racist and that all officers lie. We then faced the, earlier mentioned, Rodney King incident, which was portrayed as all officers use excessive force and more recently, the same message was sent in the Michael Brown incident, which occurred in Ferguson, MO. To reiterate, yes, police conduct, good or bad, can affect police officer across the
