The only hope of escape is rested in jumping overboard. Many of the Africans who had survived were ill or weak and was sold first a a low price. The remaining of the slaves that were healthy was sold at a scramble, and the ship's captain was the one to fixed the prices for the purchases. The slaves would be gathered into groups in a large yard that belongs to the merchants, and the purchases would collect as may as they could. Evendough the practice of slaves was common among his own people, it was different from the brutal racial hierarchy that was establish by white Europeans . Equiano was only 11 years old when he was kidnap with his sister by slave traders. They both spend time with different master in the inside of Africa before they were separated and brought to the coast. This was his first time seeing a slave ship, and he was very shock and surprise to see the unclean and inhuman conditions in which black Africans were confined on the ships. According to Equiano “the first object which saluted my eyes when I arrived on the coast, was the sea, and a slave ship, which was then riding at anchor,and waiting for its caro.” He was taking away from a land where he grew up as a warrior and brought to a coast and ship that he have never seen before, so he was frightened and in shock by the strange workings of the ship, which seem to him to be working by magic. Once convinced by other workers that they were being brought across the sea to work for the white men, he seems much relax and adapted to the environment. All chances for him to return home to his family was getting smaller and hopeless. The conditions in which they were brought thru the middle passage was so bad and the slaves were being torture provoke some of them to commit suicide. The long
